Attempts to build a multicultural society in Germany have "utterly failed", Chancellor Angela Merkel says.
She said the so-called "multikulti" concept - where people would "live side-by-side" happily - did not work, and immigrants needed to do more to integrate - including learning German.
The comments come amid rising anti-immigration feeling in Germany.
A recent survey suggested more than 30% of people believed the country was "overrun by foreigners".
The study - by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation think-tank - also showed that roughly the same number thought that some 16 million of Germany's immigrants or people with foreign origins had come to the country for its social benefits.

I used to drive a livery and have lots of mexicans I picked up from work and bars at night.
I would ask them why they were here and what they thought of America.
Here for the money. Didn’t like or dislike America. Didn’t care. Though it was never gonna happen, many talked of making enough and heading home. No such luck.
But at least their main goal wasn’t to blow up as many Americans as possible.
I don’t want EITHER illegal Mexicans or LEGAL muslims here.
But if i had to choose, i’d take illegal mexicans.
I’m not surprised. It was a fantasy for her to think that the Moslems would integrate into German society. All she had to do was look at the Turkish ‘guest workers’ whom the West German government brought in during the 60s and 70s when German businesses had more jobs than people. The Turks lived in their own enclaves and did not show any desire to integrate, even if they were only ‘temporary guest workers.’
Too late for that. Ya opened the gates and allowed them to flood in...Ya ditzy dummkopf. The Germans ought to drag you out of office and put you in prison.
She actually made this failure-of-multiculturalism talk back in 2016 originally, and probably repeated it at least two times since then. Nothing really new.
You have vast sections of Germany unaffected by this problem....mostly because it’s rural and the ‘new’ residents had zero interest in moving into rural areas. The affected regions are highly urbanized areas (like Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Berlin, etc).
The 10,000 new additional cop thing? It’s odd, because their statistical display suggests that half of crime categories are decreasing (mostly because the public has become vigilant). Drug sales? Up. Most all dealers now are non-German. German cops will tell you that crime clans/families are a major part of the stress on public safety now...with their growth going back almost 20 years.
Springtime for Merkel and Germany...

Multiculturalism is a lot like socialism. It sounds really good on paper, but is disastrous in practice.
Now, here’s where Merkel and Co. have a problem. To fix this mess, you’d have to somehow change the mindset of millions of German Muslims. That would be one tough job!
Excellent point about the Turks. It proves most of these so-called leaders have their heads up their azzes.
Only an idiot would have thought that massive immigration would not end in disaster.
The optics of rounding them up and putting them on trains back to Syria would look to bad so you are stuck with them, Merkel.
I’m all for legal immigration and strong assimilation.

My wife was an immigrant, tears ran down her cheeks when she stood for the national anthem. Those are the ones we want.
