People were elected to state and local offices to oversee infrastructure and make sure it is maintained. People were hired to staff jobs maintaining infrastructure and make sure it is maintained. There are a lot of tax increases and bond issues voted in every election to get infrastructure fixed because of being poorly maintained, but this keeps getting repeated.

I think lots of people aren't doing their jobs and need to be fired or replaced! Taxpayers are continually being suckered into tax increases that are wasted.

Here's a suggestion:

Use the gas tax revenues ONLY for bridges, roads, and state highways only.

Stop spending it on green bullshit projects, bike paths, walking trails, parking lots for new mosques, etc.

It’s going to education, Medicaid and public pensions.

After those costs are met, there’s bugger all left for infrastructure.

Add to that many bus and light rail commute lines (possibly all of them) that don’t turn a profit.

“Hey, we’ve got that gas tax money. We can use that...” x 1,000

Huh, is this headline from 2019?

Could be from 1968 when I first began to pay more serious attention to this kind of news.

Also, did you know that bees are threatened with being wiped out? Yeah, 1968 headline also.

In this week's news are glowing accounts of the new bike path installed on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge here in the SF Bay Area, built at a cost of $20 million. At the same time there are news accounts of crumbling infrastructure and the lack of funding despite a 12 percent gas tax increase.

Those costs are a drop in the bucket compared to Medicaid, education, and pensions.

The number of politicians and petty beaurocrats becoming multimillionaires while on the job correlates with the lack of bridge and highway maintenance.

I was thinking the same thing, including the part about the bees. But in the 1970s, we also heard about global cooling. I wonder when that will come back."

Maybe if these states didnt raid transportation allocated monies for social program spending and appeasing demographic voter groups to win their elections...or grossly overspend on projects as kickbacks to the road building unions...

My state had funds separate for road building and libtard gov doyle and the demtard soxialists used them for social welfare projects. Then bitched about needing to raise taxes because fedgov wasn’t upkeeping the roads and bridges.

True.

None the less, there is a broad-spread list of things those gas tax dollars are stolen to pay for. And we're not talking about one major city's transit system. We're talking about major and minor city systems across California (and the nation). And now as I understand it, the Bullet Train to nowhere has now been green-lighted to receive that gas tax increase voters suckered for earlier this year, because they were promised the money would be spend on highways.

Now they'll be whining because they don't have enough gas tax dollars AGAIN, because cars are so efficient these days. Never mind that there are twice the cars on the road there used to be.

So then they demand toll roads and bridges to offset the shortfall, (ahem, diverted funds). And even here people will say it's necessary and reasoned.

I mention the buses and light rail, because the people that ride them are not paying their own way. That gripes me. Raise the fees or close those lines down. Leave the money for what it was intended to pay for, upkeep and creation of new highways.

In Los Angeles, we're more than likely subsidizing transportation costs for a high percentage of riders who are illegal aliens. (the buses in particular) Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

Are you aware that BART (founded on September 11, 1972 LINK) in San Francisco has never turned a profit. That's closing in on half a century. LINK

"Like other public transit agencies, BART doesn’t make a profit or cover its costs. But it comes closer than most. In 2014, the most recent year comparable statistics were available, BART’s fares paid for 78 percent of its costs, more than similar systems in the U.S. New York City was second at 63 percent, with Washington Metro third at 62 percent."

Imagine how bad the other transit agencies are, 4-10.

Here's the brutal truth:

We have second-rate infrastructure across much of the country simply because we consider other things to be much more important priorities. Check out your state budget and notice how little money is spent in the Department of Transportation compared to education, welfare, etc.

LMAO! We have payed x1000 fold enough money to do it all. That money is all gone;the greatest theft of all time and counting. Government is a joke. I want their heads rolling.

the problem is, all those people hired to do this and that. Those people expecting fat state/county salaries, vacation days, golden perks and pensions. Others relying as sub-contractors and consultants on the billing costs of this and that. And that is where the money goes instead of building and maintaining the actual work they were hired for. Which all goes back to public employee unionization (fire and police exempted) which are a conflict of interest.

I don't need to check it. I live in California and know it is mismanaged. Example: money allocated to Oroville Dam for repairs was blocked and diverted by the Governor, and then the dam failed. Money suckered out of us taxpayers is continually diverted from intended destinations for stupid priorities of liberals. Current example is the wasteful Bullet Train project which is sucking money from everything else.
