Among members of the public who confronted London Bridge attacker Usman Khan were former prisoners attending a rehabilitation event at Fishmongers Hall, including a man convicted of killing a young woman.
James Ford, 42, was out on day release when he joined those who chased Khan out on to the street before he was pinned to the ground on Friday afternoon.
Ford was jailed for life with a minimum of 15 years in 2004 for the murder of Amanda Champion, who had a mental age of 15.
It is thought Ford rushed to the scene and tried to save the life of a female victim of Khan. Sources said his actions during the attack had probably saved lives. But Ms Champions family expressed concern that Hall had been allowed on day release from prison without his victims relatives being informed in advance.

This is one crazy world.
What the hell is it with the Brits and letting known killers wander around free? Is it run by Dukakis clones?
He was a hero in this one instance, and maybe this gave him a chance to redeem himself. But there is a serious problem with the British justice system.
Forget it, Jake...its Londonstan.
It is the job of the media to pick scabs and keep wounds open and oozing pus.
One murderer murdering another murderer. I’m OK with it.
LOL .... and I was just checking out "Alice's Restaurant Massacree" lyrics yesterday.
"There was all kinds of mean, nasty, ugly-lookin' people on the bench there
There was mother-rapers father-stabbers father-rapers! Father-rapers sittin' right there on the bench next to me! And they was mean
beat me to it.
The author of this hit piece is not a hero. Thanks ; a little elbow grease.
Its when these people run your government, they put your life in jeopardy.
I am not for early release for most crimes, but we need to consider these people will be back in society and need to work among us.
As someone formerly involved in prison ministry, I believe we need to provide kudos for positive behaviors and allow such persons to be reintegrated into society when their time is up.
Otherwise, they have no hope and they naturally will turn back to crime.
And, yes, Ive had ex-cons sleep in my homeone of which had killed someone at a bar.
Europe consists of suicidal liberal sheep and homicidal muslim jackals. Gee, I wonder what side will win.
Inbreeding amongst their elite and sheer overcrowding in London.
They are trying disparately to do the same here. Social justice is a rat utopia of seething devious diabolical cancer that is being paraded as a program to end racism in the justice system while allowing rapists, murderers pedophiles and other scum that need to be locked up free to roam the streets and kill their next victim, those in our family!
Was this the guy with the HUGE KNIFE....Maybe a MACHETE, that was about 20 feet away when they were taking the KILLER down?? If not...WHO WAS THE GUY WITH KNIFE?
Exactly. While I applaud his good deed, let’s not forget what he did to Amanda Champion.
Mr. Khan was taken to tusk for his misdeed.
And they all moved away from me on the Group W bench.
“And creatin’ a nuisance.”
And then they all moved back. And then we was talkin’ about mother stabbin’ and father rapin’, and all kinds of cool, groovy things...
