De Blasio defends exporting homeless to Newark

There's no place like home, Mayor Bill de Blasio says—and that's why he's shipping the city's indigent to Newark.

In his weekly Ask the Mayor radio segment, de Blasio asserted that his controversial Special One-Time Assistance program, under which the administration pays the rent of a homeless household for one year if they exit the five boroughs, as the only way to get people into long-term accommodations. The comments came in response to a caller who reported being a homeless person relocated to a dilapidated apartment in New Jersey—and came days after Newark lodged a lawsuit against de Blasio and New York City for lodging its poor in New Jersey apartments.

De Blasio acknowledged that a city Department of Investigations probe revealed this year that SOTA had placed homeless New Yorkers in unsanitary and unsafe units,

He also slammed Newark's government which, besides suing over SOTA, has barred private landlords in its jurisdiction from accepting tenants through the initiative.

Probably one of the very few, if not only, positive things he’s done for NYC.

Of course, Newark is just a couple of bucks and few minutes out of the City by public transport, so I’m not sure it would have made any real difference.

As a sanctuary city, we will keep illegas in public housing and send homeless Americans all over the country. Why do people put up with losers like de Blasio ?

i thought it was a good idea at first too.

But it IS relatively easy to send them back.

And you only bought them off for one year.

I’m sure they weren’t sent to the suburbs

From my experience, NJ bums are a bit more classy than NYC bums, so maybe they simply asked to be returned home?

Bus them to a legalised recreational marijuana state so they never come back.

You better be careful with those questions... You might find yourself in the same hole as Jeffrey Epstein.!

Giuliani would have gotten rid of them without funding a place to stay for a year.

??????

I’m not sure I follow your ‘logic’.

Causing detriment to New Jersey, and placing these folks in ANOTHER STATE, on the TAXPAYER’S dime is positive for NYC??

Exactly!!

If this is such a lofty and worthy program, Wilhelm, bus them back to NYC and put them up in some of YOUR swanky apartment buildings.

What a sick PO you-know-what.

Deporting US citizens. Didn’t Stalin do internal deportations of Russian citizens? And New Jersey is a kind of Siberia.

I don’t believe it is actually costing more insofar as NYC IIRC has a law requiring that all homeless be given housing.

And the homeless of NYC, when housed on NYC’s dime in Newark, are probably a net addition to the Newark community and economy.
