Then all the Generals and Admirals that field these false reports should be court-martialed.

I am reminded of the movie "Charlie Wilson's War".

Do you have a link for that IQ and Officer thing? Hadn’t heard that. You do have to have a minimum of 74 on the AFQT portion of the ASVAB. But the ASVAB is not an IQ test. I’d like to see a requirement of an IQ test score of 110 or better to be an officer. Though that would make it harder to fill the ranks and hurt the diversity effort. I served as both enlisted and officer and was very disappointed in what I saw in the officer corps.

It takes the Army 30 years to attempt to figure things out.

I was a Company Commander when the Army was switching from the five event PT test to the three event test.

They sent a questionnaire to all the Commanders asking their opinions.

I told them to ask Combat Veterans (around the world) just how physically fit you had to be for combat.

They ignored me and went with the three event test because it was cheap and required no equipment and favored long distance runners.

Now, I see that they are trying to be more realistic about the PT test.

I also recommended an IQ test for promotion for Officers.

We have Generals that have great 2 mile run times but can’t seem to figure out how to win wars,

“CONFIDENTIAL documents reveal US officials failed to tell the truth...”

Can you say “Gulf of Tonkin Resolution”? The Viet Nam war was based on a lie, 58,000+ US dead. In neither case did US officials “fail”. They deliberately lied, with malice afterthought.

The founding fathers warned future generations about “foreign entanglements” and alliances. If only this nation had heeded George Washington’s advice in his farewell address.

The founding fathers also feared standing professional armies for a reason. They will be used if they exist. The vision of the founders was to rely on citizen militias for defense of the homeland. They would only be employed if there was an actual threat to the homeland.

We have a standing army deplored all over the globe for what reason. The average American is more likely to be injured or killed by one of the millions of people illegally streaming across the border each year, or one of the “refugees” our government brings in to this country and resettles at taxpayer expense, than the Russian army in Europe, the Taliban in Afghanistan, ISIS in Syria, the rebels in Libya, or whatever insurgents military advisors are consulting about in dozens of African hell holes. The recent Pensacola attack shows the threat is inside our borders not outside. Bring the troops home and fortify the border. Let Europe, Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Japan, and the rest of the world deal with its own problems.

It is not un-winnable but as President Trump has stated, he could win it in two weeks, but he doesn't want to kill 10,000,000 mooselimbs.

My question is why not?

I'd call 10 million a good start on solving the mooselimb problem.

Is there any truth to the somewhat believable rumors that our troops were guarding the heroine trade?

That’s not a rumor.

When you say “our”, do you mean American troops? I will assume so. That being the assumption, our Marines refused to do so and did not.

However, the Brits, and several other coalition units did protect some of the growers at harvest time to prevent theft by traffickers.

American and coalition units were also used at times by various tribal militias to degrade their enemies. Some of whom were trafficking competitors.

“It is not un-winnable”

What would a win look like?

No gunfire?

Peaceful elections?

The end of graft and corruption?

A central government that can extend federal military power to all the borders?

The end of poppy growing?

A controlled border with Iran and Pakistan?

The Taliban disarming?

What would a win look like?

10,000 years of radioactive, molten, then hardened, glass in a SHITHOLE that was once known as afghanistan.

No more opium coming from that rat hole and a severe warning to the rest of the world's ragheads.

Read my tag line, read the koran, you decide if you'd like to live next door to radical mooselimbs {which are all of them}.

OK, maybe there are some "moderate Muslims" but they are too afraid to speak up, and when they do, they become bigger targets than the World Trade Center.

islam is a gutter religion, and should not be allowed in any place on earth.

Too strong, tough shit.

Winnable?
Nobody has ever been successful in Afghanistan since about 330BC with Alexander the Great.
Why would we be any different?

“It was, and still is, winnable.”

Wrong. Afghanistan hasn’t been winnable for anyone or any army in the past 2500 years.
