Report: Mitch McConnell Likely to Acquit Trump, Not Dismiss Impeachment Charges
Breitbart ^ | December 12, 2019 | JOSHUA CAPLAN

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is expected to acquit President Donald Trump in the Senate if he’s impeached in the House, not just dismiss the charges against him, two senators told CNN on Wednesday.

CNN reports:

Republicans want to have a vote on acquittal — to clear the President of the charges against him — not simply rely on a 51-vote threshold procedural motion to dismiss the hotly disputed case.

The Constitution mandates 67 votes are required to convict the President and remove him from office, a barrier widely considered too high to be reached in this case.

One vote McConnell can’t rely on is that of Vice President Mike Pence, who has “no role in impeachment,” according to a GOP leadership aide, despite being president of the Senate with the mandate to break ties.

One of the senators, speaking anonymously, said McConnell would not call a vote on a motion to proceed to the impeachment articles unless he knew he had the 51 votes needed to end the trial, which would then set up a final vote on the articles themselves. On that final vote, 67 votes would be needed to convict Trump and remove him from office.

Speaking to CNN on the record, Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) argued that it “would make more sense” to vote on impeachment articles than on a motion to dismiss. Cornyn noted the second option would mean the Senate would “decide this on a 51-vote threshold, with the potential tie and all the recriminations that would flow from that.”

This had better be after a long list of witnesses and an interminable deliberation process so the senators running for president cannot campaign for as long as possible

I wish I could count on the Senate Republicans to dismiss or acquit, but I can’t. Too many RINO’s.

If I read this right it will be just like when Impeached Bill Xlinton’s trail was fast tracked to a vote to acquit without a real trial with witnesses, etc.

Senator McConnell, there is a great number of the Presidents supporters out here that want a pound of Democrat flesh for this 3 year ordeal. Please get it right.

But I am not holding my breath.

The Rulers will do what they want despite what “We the People...” want.

Yes, but voting to acquit also legitimizes the kangaroo court in the House.

Not only that, but all those senators need to understand that if they do not hold a trial, and thoroughly and completely air everything including calling ALL witnesses (that means Schiff and the Bidens) all Republicans will be under a cloud and there will a GOP blood bath for the next several elections, just as there was with Nixon. Republicans lost everywhere for the next several election cycles because of the lies and subsequent destruction of Nixon, which went unchallenged. There is only way to save the Republican party and that is a trial in the senate that goes into everything! A lot of Americans need to be shown there is no “there” there.

Exactly right. They serve the big money interests and don’t give a damn about “we the people”. Our government is a kleptocracy.

Of course the Turtle wants a trial.

Its his way of gaining leverage for him and his corrupt senatorial brethren over Trump, in order to squeeze Trump for graft and pork.

Once the subpoenas go out....figure at least a month wasted on court challenges that these figures (Joe and Hunter Biden) will refuse to show up. This may open the door, and just dismiss this out of the Senate because they can’t run a hearing without the witnesses showing up.

TRUMP 12 YEAR PRESIDENT

Trump serves 12 years if impeached and removed.

A simple agreement with McConnell, to be free to rerun again, and Trump serves 12 years ... all legal.

Impeaching a popular President risks giving him a nearly 12 year term. All legal.

Trump gets a 1 month vacation too.

Trump serves 2016 2017 2018 and 3/4ths of 2019.
Trump is impeached, removed, but free to rerun.
Pence is lame duck for a quarter of 2019.
Constitution limits 2 full 4 year terms.
Trump then runs and wins 2020 & 2024.

Trump is the 12 year President.
WINNING!

McConnell, let us do it! Be famous.

There isn’t much difference between voting “motion to dismiss” and outright acquittal. Either way, the House gets to put out its case.

Generally motion to dismiss is that the complaint, as expressed by the House, is just not an impeachable offense. No trial needed, no defense needed, the facts as presented by the DEMs don’t support impeachment.

Having the trial means the other side presents a defense, gives a competing version of facts or law or both, and the the trier (the Senate) decides which version of facts and law it will apply, but does so in a way that obscures the reason for acquittal.

I think it is easy to see that disposing of the scam works better for the Senate if a defense is allowed. It gives the GOP a chance to rebut the nutty charges the House is making.

I agree. This is why McConnell will not bring up USMCA until impeachment trial is completed since he knows Trump wants it completed!

No John Cornyn. An initial vote on the articles is the worst case. You don't vote to impeach a president without calling the president's witnesses.

From best to worst case...
