I, like most people from my home state of Illinois, am a great admirer of Abraham Lincoln.
Recently I've wondered what would have happened had Nancy Pelosi been the Speaker of the House when Abraham Lincoln was president.
Would Speaker Pelosi's House Democrats use the same flimsy impeachment standard they are currently using to impeach Honest Abe, one of the greatest presidents in the history of our country?
In 1998 I was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives during the Clinton impeachment, and in 2009, as the 40th governor of Illinois, I had the unhappy experience of being impeached and removed from office.

If I recall my history, the House Democrats in Lincoln’s time would have impeached Lincoln if they could get away with it.

Democrats started a war, tried a few times to assassinate Lincoln until they were finely successful. They haven’t changed in nature since 1850. Of course they would impeach Lincoln.
Well, Trump’s mentioned it a few times. Blago’s corrupt as any other Chicago politician, but he got crushed because Obama wanted him crushed.

Not that I blame him. One punch killings in NYC are punished as misdemeanors with a 1 year maximum sentence. Whereas Blagojevich got 14 years. If he’s getting 14, one punch killers should get 28. Or more.
Democrats couldn’t impeach Lincoln, so they started the country’s bloodiest war instead.

Lincoln suspended habeas corpus and issued the Emancipation Proclamation with no authority. He was also very heavy handed with measures to keep Maryland in the Union. So, yeah, there’s your “abuse of power.”
Had he lived, the Republicans might have impeached Lincoln. Remember he was advocating the return of the ex-Confederate States with as little fuss as possible. Had he lived, he would have been seriously bumping heads with the Radical Republicans in the House and Senate. They impeached Johnson for not wanting to punish the South.
The Democrats demonstrated back then that they were not above doing far worse.
His job wasn’t to lose the nation in the middle of a rebellion.

Exactly right. My point is that “abuse of power” is a charge an opposition party can level against just about any President, even one engaged in saving the Union.

To the contrary. Lincoln started the country's bloodiest war.
