Rep. Phil Roe (R-Tenn.) announced Friday that he will not seek reelection, making the six-term lawmaker the latest House Republican to head for the doors.
"After prayerful consideration, I have decided to retire at the end of the 116th Congress," Roe said in a statement.
"Serving East Tennesseans these past 11 years has been the honor of my life, and I will be forever grateful for the trust my friends and neighbors put in me to represent them," said Roe, the top Republican on the House Veterans' Affairs Committee. "As someone who practiced medicine for over 30 years, I said I would serve five or six terms because I never intended this job to be a second career."

WHY on Gods green earth is it our side that is always headed for the doors and the Dems are carried out in coffins!!!!
Nothing to worry about. East Tennessee is strongly Republican and will come up with a SOLID replacement to run for, and eventually WIN the seat and keep it Republican.
He can spend time with his family watching the videos from Pedophile Island with Epstein - who did not kill himself.
Exactly my question.
Here these people are, front row seats to making this nation better than ever, and yawn, they choose to leave.
What the H?
“WHY on Gods green earth is it our side that is always headed for the doors and the Dems are carried out in coffins!!!!”
Because Demoncrats are insane.
Self term limits, I approve.
Are these guys #NeverTRUMPers???
No kidding
Milk Dud 2.0 will cling to power til his last breath.

Understand the point you are making but I i’m sure we can agree that after 30+ years in medicine and 12 years in congress we can all wish Mr.Roe a well earned retirement.
Rep. Roe is 74, for heaven’s sake, according to a quick internet search.
Why is it that every time a GOP legislator retires, deep thinkers on these threads assume he’s a Never Trumper or harboring some scandalous secret?
Sometimes, a retirement is just a retirement.
Are they? Or are we?
Will we keep the seat?

Replies six and seven are good, short answers.
The answer about his age being 74 deserves honourable mention.
The best medium-length answer, in my opinion, would be to go read the whole of Plato’s Republic with the advice to reflect in particular on the teaching concerning the Philosopher-King in its full context. My short version of the medium-length answer is that people who want power should generally never be given power, which means that if you want the best people to rule over you, you must find means to compel them to be willing to rule. That the Dems were willing to nominate Hillary was sufficient to bring Trump out of the woodwork (I don’t think that he would want the job if someone roughly as competent as himself were willing to take it, which makes him better than any professional politician who would rather have a higher job if they are roughly competent enough).
Full disclosure—while I have a degree in philosophy, it is not my field (I am a college professor), and while I have respect for Plato, as a philosopher I would identify as an Aristotelean in the Thomistic tradition (this is capable of further specification).
You probably don’t want to hear what the long answer might look like, or a summary thereof.
True life is more than logic
“Understand the point you are making but I im sure we can agree that after 30+ years in medicine and 12 years in congress we can all wish Mr.Roe a well earned retirement.”
Yes. Two more years in the House is comparable to the danger and sacrifice our troops are exposed to every day overseas.
Rats jumping ship? Cowards?
True life is more than logic
I agree completely. As would Plato, Aristotle, and Thomas.
A person who is very good at logic but not well connected with the world is to some degree insane. To quote Chesterton, the mad man has lost everything except his reason.
Prudence, and its connected virtues, are essential to see what is actually the best course of action, and many other virtues are necessary if one is to actually carry this course of action out.
That said, logic does have its place. But again, I did not opt to devote a large portion of my life (beyond acquiring a degree) to philosophy, so I have a vested interest in holding this position.
