The U.S. military said the security situation was “fluid” at a Kenyan airfield used by U.S. forces after a pre-dawn attack Sunday by the al-Shabab extremist group. The attack destroyed U.S. aircraft and vehicles, Kenyan authorities said, and at least four attackers were killed.

We had a chance to wipe al_Shabab back when it began as a rag-tag outfit of extremists bent on utilizing terrorism to obtain their objectives, etc. We should have wiped them then.
The Kenya-Somalia border is the weak link and is poorly guarded and patrolled.
Very easy for attackers from Somalia to infiltrate the country without detection and rapid response.
The situation is tailor-made for al-Shabab to attack targets throughout Kenya with virtual impunity.
One unlikely to change significantly in the foreseeable future.

Al Shabab operates in Kenya in the context of tribal war between the Muslim tribes and the rest of Kenya.
Once Al Shabab awakens the wrath of the Kikuyu and those who hold the legacy of Jomo Kenyatta, Al Shabab followers will be skewered and roasted like pigs in public. The same happened in Ethiopia, which has ousted all of the jihadist mavens there in a horrid cleansing that hearkens back to their tribal warfare history.
The shared government between Muslims and Christians in Kenya will not be able to stop it.
