German Chancellor Angela Merkel will travel to Moscow on Saturday to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin amid growing tensions in the Middle East and elsewhere, officials said Monday.
Merkel and Putin will discuss current international questions, said Steffen Seibert, the chancellors spokesman. Those will include Syria, Libya, Iran, Iraq, Ukraine and bilateral ties.
Russia is an important player on the world stage and as a permanent member of the (U.N.) Security Council its also indispensable when it comes to solving political conflicts, Seibert said. Germany is currently a non-permanent member of the Security Council.
Germany and Russia are among the world powers that have been trying to salvage the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran after the U.S. withdrew from the agreement unilaterally in 2018.
Merkel has already spoken with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday about the situation in the Middle East, Seibert said.
Germany has offered to mediate between all parties following the killing of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani in a U.S. airstrike in Iraq last week.

Wonder if INSTEX will come up....
Trump has upset the Iran kickback gravy train for all of Europe.
Merkel and her Boss
Mediate what exactly? Iran's unconditional surrender?
——for all of Europe.——
and the USA via the Burismia pipeline
Will they ever say the word “collusion” with respect to those two . . . ?
Oh for eff sake, can anyone ever mention the Middle East without the word crisis?
Trump needs to finish the job he started. One down, six to go.
Hmmm... Another target of opportunity?
Not really. This crisis is a great opportunity for EU to emerge as a global power.
I have an idea . . . lob a missile on top of Merkel. . . maybe Macron, too. That would solve lots of problems.
No thanks. They’ve been bucking for that for decades; their brand of socialism is not wanted nor needed.
That’s cute, two old commies meeting just like the good old days.
Not really. EU is heavily outclassed by everyone else diplomatically. And that is mostly because they don’t really try. With widespread rejection of all things American they might capitalize on it. Although most likely they’d fail.
If Russia and Germany can work together does that mean we dont need NATO anymore ?
What “widespread rejection of all things American”? That’s an illusion fomented by the left-wing press not only on the American continent but also (and especially) the European.
“Oh for eff sake, can anyone ever mention the Middle East without the word crisis?
Cry Seas! LOL
Merkel is colluding with the Russians.
