Kentucky Senator Rand Paul told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on Monday that he believes Congress must have a chance to vote on President Donald Trump's moves toward a war with Iran and has discussed a War Powers Resolution with co-sponsor, Virginia Senator Tim Kaine.
"I think killing a country's major general is an act of war," Paul said. "I don't think you can get away with saying it's 'imminent.' They've been complaining for years about Soleimani. I mean, most of the killings that are attributed to him are, I think, are from the Iraq War. You know, ten years ago or longer. And so, I think that saying this is 'imminent' and saying they don't need the permission of Congress goes against the traditions of our Constitution."
"Whether it's been a Democrat president, I've been a stickler that the way to make war rare is to make it to where you actually have to vote on it in Congress and that it has to be overwhelming," Paul continued. "There have been timeswhere we were attacked on 9/11, virtually everybody voted to go after those who attacked us. Same way with Pearl Harbor."
"But this is sort of a different situation where no one's really proposing all-out war," Paul explained. "What we're proposing is something that will fester and go on and on and dribs and drabs of intermittent violence for decades, if not generations."

He wasn’t in Iran. Thanks for playing.
Libertarians. Yikes! Same old, same old. Youre okay, Im okay schlick.
Deadly, but always *sounds* virtuous and ethereal.
General Salami Slice wasn’t in Iran, he was in Iraq.
He was also there to further the Iranian annexation of Iraq.
Plus, Salami Slice was responsible for a plethora of acts of war against us.
SOMEBODY finally noticed and ended him.
you illiterate guys in washington... think you have to parent the new President and teach him how to act just like you.
we elected a man unconnected to Washington and one who owed no one.. a man for the people!
leave him alone.. he is busy making our country fit to live in .. and it was a swampy mess!
And as is always the case Rand has zero idea what he is blathering about when it comes to foreign policy
Ive been saying that over and over.
That fact that the General was in Iraq should shut the whole debate down.
What was he doing in Iraq?
How would Mr. Ryan have Trump tell Congress without allowing certain members to know?
Yep, like father like son, libertarians both
The Authorization for Use of Military Force September 14, 2001 grants the President the power to act against Iran if it can be shown that Iran was part of the September 11 attack.
Many time Rand is as thick as a brick.
The Iranian Regime is not a legitimate government as far as I’m concerned so he’s no different than a Somali pirate or ISIS “General”.
Issues were from Ten years ago ? Whats wrong with his short term memory - attacking our Embassy. That was the act of war.
Ron wants the embassy closed.
As part of this whole recipe the administration, mainly at John Bolton’s behest, tore up the Iran agreement, placed a significant and severe embargo on Iran and then killed one of their major generals. Nobody in their right mind would actually think that would lead to negotiations.”
This guy has his head in the clouds. Why on earth would we want to chit chat with them after their attack.
Ok. But, how does that explain his unsupportive and wimpy views about Trumps response to the Embassy attack and his sadness over the General ?
The sanctions and ripping up the Iran deal came before the embassy was attacked. The point he is making is that these are simply predictable reactions..
The only way to cope with Iran is to put it in a such situation to beg the negotiation with US. The President Trump knows how to do that!
I want to see rand explain to the 600 + American Gold Star families face to face that their sons or daughters being killed by salami wasn’t an act of war.
Rand would probably say blame the guy who sent you there: Bush.
He wants to bring the troops home and thinks they deserve better than fighting a war with no clear mission.
