Gaetz votes for the War Powers Resolution????
Twitter ^ | 1/9/2020 | Matt Gaetz

Posted on 01/09/2020 3:50:40 PM PST by grayboots

I represent more troops than any other member of this body. I buried one of them earlier today at Arlington.

If our servicemembers have the courage to fight and die in these wars, Congress ought to have the courage to vote for or against them.

I’m voting for this resolution.

Dubious constitutionality. Has the WPA ever even been tested in court?

So he votes to let another 608 die from Iranian ieds with no retaliation, and the ones now in Iraq being rocketed by iranian militia to hide in bunkers until congress votes to shoot back.

Despicable

Its a concurrent resolution , and it cannot be sent to the President to be made iknto law by his signature.

If it were a true bill, the president would veto, and the Dems could not over-ride it, they do not have the votes.

This is for show only.

I may not agree with Gaetz, but I respect his opinion on forcing Congress to do their jobs. Realistically, the President should do what needs to be done real time, but CONGRESS should start declaring wars by vote. That’s my opinion, I understand others.

Just because he represents a district with a high percentage of military and veterans does not mean he speaks for them in this.
I can virtually guarantee you most combat vets would rather obey the orders of the Commander-in-Chief when action is needed than wait for the circus known as the Congress to debate endlessly over whether or not to take action.
I spent 36 years of my life in service to this country and I think this guy joining with Pelosi in her obvious political ploy is beyond the pale.
Then, he tries to cover himself in the mantle of service members and vets in his district? Despicable.

He is my congressman.

I recall some time ago a guy on FR, saying about Gaetz, “I like him but I do not trust him”.

I heard Gaetz was going wobbly, but House Minority Leader MCCarthy has been trying to Explain that just like there is a Resolution passed for bringing in some group to the Capitol bldg, every year, so is this Resolution, which is being pushed against POTUS powers for issuing a military Defensive action.

It carries no real weight. It is not a law.

The response to this Tom foolery is, basically, do we really want 530 COMMANDERS IN CHIEF to agree, first, on an issuing some urgent defensive action?????

The Democrats are out of control— furious at facing a ground breaking, heroic and historic President, Trump.

It’s irrelevant anyway. They may as well of said they hate eating dog shxt and voted a resolution on it. It means nothing.

If I was Trump I’ asked straight up.. If Russia launches nuclear missiles at the US should I wait for congressional approval or should I allow a retaliatory response first?

Radio news headline a couple of hours ago called this “a non-binding resolution.”

As Senator Graham might say, it is a nothing-burger.

He voted for nothing, it doesn’t matter, and I don’t disagree with what he said.

The problem with Congress and it redeeming it’s “war powers” authority is that Congress cannot historically be counted on to be consistent on principles and what measures of national security would require they act, and that there decisions to act or not act - at least since the 1960s - will be politically biased not politically neutral.

They KNOW that, and prefer to leave themselves removed from responsibility for any military action we may take, and then kibitz, complain and object after any action is taken. The most they have done in recent years is just try to tie up funds for any military effort, and even then those actions have been mostly partisan affairs.

Given that history Presidents have probably been right not to leave most military engagement decisions to a committee of 465 people with few who can put the national interest first, ahead of their own politics and political ambitions.

This belies common sense.

Pelosi REFUSED Pence’s call to notify her of the rocket/missile attacks. Now, she wants POTUS to notify her IN ADVANCE? This is akin to the 3:00 a.m. telephone call meme.

The Family's Bushism streak is shining through.

Gaetz's sister was director of digital content for Jeb Bush's 2016 presidential campaign.
