Does California Want to Secede?

California certainly marches to the beat of a different drummer. They treat the federal government as a rival fiefdom, setting their own environmental laws, their own immigration laws, their own fuel standards -- as if the seat of power in the United States was in Sacramento.

On Friday, Governor Gavin Newsom will present the state's budget for the next fiscal year. In it, he will propose that the state of California sell its own brand of prescription drugs in order to "increase competition in the generic drug marketplace and lower the cost of medications by having Sacramento contract drugmakers to manufacture certain prescriptions under a state label."

"Greedy pharmaceutical companies"? According to a study by Tufts University released last year, it costs a drug company $2.6 billion to bring a drug to market. There is no "greed" when pharmaceutical companies -- whose innovations and research save countless lives every year -- need to get a return on that massive investment.

Be that as it may, California is carving out an independent role in health care that does not bode well for the rest of us.

Fox News:

While the proposal is still in the conceptual phase, the plan is in line with a number of executive orders Newsom signed last year

Because California is so large, with such a huge economy and so many people, the state's dominance generally steers industry and other governments in the direction it wants. No company that does business with state governments can afford to ignore what California is doing.

If California doesn't think that Washington should be setting national policy, why be a member of the union of states in the first place? Its $3 trillion economy would be ranked 5th in the world if the Golden State was a sovereign nation. Maybe it's time that California thought about being a separate country.

They act like it anyway.

What do you think that $3 trillion economy would be worth if dysfunctional California were to become a separate country?

They cannot leave because administering the land use is beyond the grasp of the current crop of legislators.

There is no consensus on water distribution.
Most of the state is a desert.

Naah, don’t let them secede. We should occupy them as they are a hostile and lawless entity.

Nope....they want to control the entire world.
Until Trump started pushing back, they were on the way to writing all future laws and have them administered by the UN.
All of the power, none of the responsibility.

What a lovely thought. Imagine the conniption fit the Democrats would have if CA seriously contemplated it - they’d never win another presidential vote without California.

Let's prompt Kali to secede, and then invade. I'm sure that $3 trillion economy can support the Kali NG against the 1st Marine Division.

Two days, maybe three.. Then, round up and shoot all the traitors. We tried being nice, the last time, and the Democrats didn't learn.

The problem with California seceding is that, like Venezuela, it’s implosion is inevitable. Gavin Newsom makes Hugo Chavez look like an astute economist.

But, if the state leaves, it’ll go completely in the tank within a decade, and then will beg the U.S. to bail it out, and allow them to reenter the union.

That will be an enormously expensive undertaking.

And the Democrats want to flood Texas with enough illegals to turn Texas blue which would mean the Republicans would never win another election. Unfortunately, that seems more likely than California leaving.

They cannot leave because we will kill them. That’s called CW2. You’re all talking about the ongoing plan to steal California from the United States, via illegal immigration. It almost would be worth a secession attempt in that we could identify them as traitors and treat them accordingly. Otherwise, the population wave from the illegal immigration states it’s going to spread out until Democrats control the Union.

Prefer to see Northern California splitting off and becoming the state of Jefferson. Doesn’t matter then if South California stays or goes, they lose political power.

California must stay. A house divided against itself cannot stand. Its part of the Union.

Now getting rid of idiot politicians like G Newsom is really the issue. CA produced Devin Nunes so it obviously can produce good pols. There needs to be an upsurge to kick the idiots out.

So IMO you guys are just jealous. Yes CA has produced the fruits and nuts, Hollywood, Alyssa Milano, Jim Carrey and other assorted drags on society. But on the other hand CA has produced (last century) an unparalleled educational system (on higher levels), great produce, technical innovations, concern for the environment, and of course military havens and ports (and technology). And...natural spaces and vacation-enjoyment spots. It simply needs a cleanup and scouring of undesirable elements, starting with Dem pols.
