Republicans’ Emerging Defense: Trump’s Actions Were Bad, but Not Impeachable
NYT ^ | Feb 2, 2020 | Emily Cochrane

WASHINGTON — Even as they are set to acquit President Trump in his impeachment trial this week, Senate Republicans appear to be increasingly breaking with his defense that he did nothing wrong.

© Erin Schaff/The New York Times “I think he shouldn’t have done it — I think it was wrong,” said Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, center right. “Inappropriate, was the way I’d say it. Improper, crossing the line.” On Sunday, Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, who was a key vote against calling witnesses in the Senate trial, expanded upon his criticism that Mr. Trump was “crossing the line” in his pressure campaign against Ukraine. And Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa, who has remained a reliable defender of the president during his trial, called his actions “not what I would have done.”

A day before the first contest of the 2020 election, two days before Mr. Trump’s State of the Union address and three days before his expected acquittal, they and other Republicans appeared to be coalescing around a more nuanced argument: Mr. Trump’s efforts to push Ukraine into investigating a political rival while withholding critical military aid might not have been appropriate. But that did not warrant the president’s removal from office for the first time in American history.

Stating that Trump did something wrong is opinion, not fact.

Yeah, I’m really getting tired of this narrative.

There’s nothing wrong AT ALL with how Trump handled the Ukraine thing. Completely within bounds.

I can only guess certain pols willing to call it “bad” is ass-covering via focus-group.

“...Senate Republicans appear to be increasingly breaking with his defense that he did nothing wrong.” Stopped reading right there. Which Senate Republicans, and appeared to whom? Just more fake projection from the Slimes.

So "they" believe it "bad" to expose corruption.

Tells us everything we need to know about "them"!

And when the New York Times says “Republicans emerging defense”. They mean a very small (and shrinking) handful of RINO’s, the vast majority of Republicans feel Trump did nothing wrong. Period. But the New York Times is still living in the 1980’s when newspapers still mattered and the country club RINO Republicans actually ruled the party.

Like I said. There will be enough RINOs to vote with the Rats to have a majority to find Trump guilty. Not a super majority but enough to give the Rat media something to rag on till the election. RatRinos.

The actions were not even “bad”, they were done in the overall best interests of the United States of America, a concept foreign to the NYT.

To the degree that these actions may have also preserved or extended benefit to Donald J. Trump, that was only incidental to the assertion of the rights of the US government in international commerce and diplomacy. This was all accomplished at little or no cost in American lives, and resulted in much greater disruption to entities who have openly declared their enmity to the United States and Western civilization.

Mercy is reserved for another time, when that animosity has been sufficiently subdued so the enemy calls for peace. Stop kicking in his ribs, negotiate terms sufficiently honorable to both sides, then and only then give an assist to lifting the former opponent to some degree of recovery. But the hanging promise of again knocking that opponent down remains a part of the negotiated armistice.

What Trump did was perfectly normal and wholesome and required by law and treaty.

Fake news, false narrative. The Talking heads of the DNC/MSM just want to plant this mitigating statement crap for the moderates to consider. The best response is to point out that Trump was doing his job and that the American public needs to be aware of the corruption involved with this foreign Aid money laundering scheme. Each Senator should pound in the fact that this corruption Scandal crosses the party lines and involves both Democrats and Republicans. Chuck that piece of garbage Romney under the bus. Put the four Deep State “Establishment” politicians in the Limelight. Pelosi, Kerry, Biden, and Romney kids were used to process the kickback money. Stealing US Taxpayer funds that were earmarked and intended to help the country of Ukraine.

I doubt this very much. Any republican senator who votes "guilty" will probably lose his seat next election. Trump is extremely popular in the republican party.

“I think he shouldn’t have done it — I think it was wrong,” said Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, center right. “Inappropriate, was the way I’d say it. Improper, crossing the line.”

That is a perfect example of what is wrong with the GOP. Lamar cannot surrender to the narrative fast enough. Tennessee can do a lot better and will. Lamar was fine for the political landscape of 40 years ago. Those days are long gone.

“Republicans’ Emerging Defense”

RINOs’ defense, they mean. Most “Republicans” see through this farce.
