To refresh our memories, it was in 1986 when the No. 4 nuclear reactor in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded and was burning as the solid fuel rods of Uranium melted down. The smoke and steam from the fire and firefighting spread across Northern Europe and the Russian steppes. The number of deaths attributed to this disaster could be as high as 100,000 but accepted estimates are closer to 27,000.
It was the failure of the Soviet system in dealing with a coordinated response that shook the faith of the people. They began to question whether the Soviet government had abandoned the interests of the people in favor of propaganda. The conclusion was that it certainly was not the health and welfare of the people which was first and foremost in Soviet governmental policy. Gorbachev himself wrote in 2006:
The nuclear meltdown at Chernobyl was perhaps the true cause of the collapse of the Soviet Union.
It is clear that Gorbachev could not bring himself to admit that it was Ronald Reagans foreign policy which was the underlying cause. Regardless of the causes of the collapse, it seems history is about to repeat itself.
The outbreak in Peoples Republic of China (PRC) has led to a declaration of a global public health emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO). In the 2019 WHO report of the ten most likely threats to global health, an influenza pandemic was in the top three. In light if recent events, it seems that it should have been listed as the number one threat.
Just as with the Chernobyl cover-up, there are indications that the outbreak of the corona virus is much more severe than has been admitted by the communist government.

If people start dying in the streets in other countries we can start worrying.
I hope you all dumped your “emerging markets” funds before the coronavirus epidemic. Most EM funds were purposely loaded with securities from Chinese banks, insurance firms and industrials, all of which are controlled by the CCP.
"I would note that Wuhan has China's only biosafety level-four super laboratory that works with the world's most deadly pathogens to include, yes, coronavirus,"
Some scientists now speculate that the government of the PRC was using this lab to devise a biowarfare pathogen. The process would include developing a vaccine, then testing the vaccine. The test subjects would likely be human. China, with the assistance of other communist countries, has a history of experimentation on human subjects, e.g. Korean War POWs.
The possible scenario for the current outbreak is that the test vaccine was ineffective and the human test subjects were not effectively quarantined. There is an historical parallel concerning the Spanish Flu outbreak. It has been alleged that the Spanish Flu of 1918 was the result of contaminated Yellow Fever vaccines. If a bioweapon development proves to be the cause, then it is likely that this pathogen will not be contained effectively, at least not in China. The measures that the PRC has taken so far seem too little too late. Leaked video of doctors having meltdowns as the hospitals are overwhelmed seem to confirm that the situation is out of control.
I really don't think it would get to that juncture in the industrialized West. Knock on wood, of course.
Alexander Solzhenitsyn together with the First Gulf War ended the Soviet Empire.
Solzhenitsyn’s books convinced the Soviet people that even in the unlikely event that they conquered the world there would be no escape from (nor even a slight relenting of) the gulag system nor the brutality of their own government.
The First Gulf War convinced the Soviets that winning a war against America wasn’t happening anytime soon.
I’ll wait to see before I start wearing a mask in Walmart as some are already doing, mostly Asians.
Chernobyl was before my time, but I would think nuclear bleep is easily detectable and thus undeniable. We don’t know much about the coronavirus at this time. China’s too good at putting on a face and shutting people up.
I have a suspicious nature so the site of the outbreak, by itself, makes me suspect it came from a lab, not a flying squirrel or bird nest soup or whatever.
In any case, from the information coming out, it doesn’t sound very deadly, and the information NOT coming out may be the Great Stonewall of China.
If so — if they’re that effective at muzzling over a billion people — they’re nowhere near the end of their criminal tyranny.
Old Chinese saying, “1.5 billion can keep a secret, if 100 million of them are dead.”
which was kind of my point. But I keep an open mind based on what happens next.
If my previous response came off as kind of snotty, I did not mean that. But looking at it in retrospect, I can see how it could come off that way. My intent was to point out that I agree with you. May bad.
Isolating the virus may not be needed for treatment. Some good news for a change. Readily available drugs can be used to treat the most affected (lower the death rate). See below.
Also, the gene sequencing is nearly completed and a vaccine is almost ready for human testing. The Coronavirus (not this strain) has been around for a long time so it made the gene sequencing quick.
Thailand found good results after using a mix of two antiviral drugs on a Chinese patient who was in a serious condition with the novel coronavirus, according to a health ministry briefing.
The patients condition significantly improved within 48 hours after the medical team decided to use antiviral drugs originally used for HIV and influenza in his treatment, Kriangsak Attipornwanich, a doctor at the state-owned Rajavithi Hospital who is treating the patient, told reporters at the Public Health Ministry briefing Sunday. The patients test result also turned negative, the doctor said.
There’s plenty of anecdotal evidence that the death toll is higher than being said. There’s also a lot of evidence that there are a lot more people with the disease than is being said, which would drastically lower the mortality rate.
The Chinese are flipping out, and the numbers they give appear to be a shade above junk.
For those that have healed or died, the mortality rate from the official numbers has descended from about 65% to 40% in China.
But wait, the Chinese are reported to have been burning dead without testing them for the virus, so that mortality rate could be notably higher.
But wait, when the number with the disease was listed at 1100 and the dead to 41, we were seeing accounts that there were really about 95000 with the disease. That could drop the mortality rate to about 0.04%
But wait, we’ve seen that the Chinese have run out of med supplies, test kits, and have begun barricading people into their homes...which would mean that on one hand the mortality rate there is completely untranslatable to mortality rates there; and on the other hand, the Chinese are completely flipping out, so that suggests something much more serious than the common flu.
As it sits, the mortality rate, in China, appears to be somewhere between 0.04% and 60% or so.
Antivirals are notoriously expensive. How much are the ones cited?
I think the fatality rate is much higher too.
The BBC report said over 10% of the first 99 cases died.
Sites are currently saying 2% based on known deaths/confirmed cases. But recoveries are only 3%. And 13% of confirmed cases are in critical condition.
If only 3% have recovered, then what’s happened to the 97%? Well 2% have died. So 95% are still sick. and 13% are sick and critical.
Deaths are lagging confirmed cases by about 6 days assuming fatality rate of 10%.
I don’t know, but there is one company that makes the generic cocktail relatively cheap. But they would only be used on those that cannot recovery themselves (two-precenters). Basically it is used for HIV treatment and they almost give it away as part of their global mission.
Wuhan Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV)
So how virulent is it? If it afflicts 25% of the people in China, that's over 10 million dead in China alone.
All because somebody let this thing escape a lab in Wuhan - this is an engineered virus.
