Romney reportedly laughed hysterically at suggestion his impeachment vote is part of a plan to run for president

If Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) had an ulterior motive for his decision to vote to convict President Trump for abuse of power, he's doing a good job of hiding it.

In an interview with The Atlantic, Romney was asked about a speculative story published by The Washington Examiner, which suggested his bipartisan behavior during the Senate impeachment trial was part of a plan to run for president in 2024. Romney, people told the Examiner, was trying to establish himself as the star of the Republican old guard should Trump fail in the 2020 election.

That apparently got Romney right in the gut, but not because his feelings were hurt. Instead, per The Atlantic, Romney cracked up at the idea. "Yes! That's it!," he reportedly jokingly exclaimed. "Look at the base I have! It's going to be at least 2 or 3 percent of the Republican Party. As goes Utah, so goes the nation!"

I am so proud I didn't vote for Romney in 2016. In fact, I cheered when he conceded - stunned and glassy-eyed - to Obama. The GOP needed a fumigation, and I knew that couldn't happen if an establishment dud like Romney got elected.

“I am so proud I didn’t vote for Romney in 2016.”

I mean in 2012. I didn’t vote for Romney when he was the GOP nominee. His loss cleared the decks for an outsider - and I voted happily, proudly for TRUMP in 2016.

Think of it. If Romney had won in 2012, he could still be president today! Don’t think about that for too long or you might lose sleep tonight.

He’s finished.

Of course, he could always run as a Democrat.

Maybe they’ll have him.

This should be the death of Romney in the Republican party.

Maybe he can run as a democrat, but I doubt they would trust him either.

I think he is done.

I hope POTUS retweets Romney’s 2012 concession speech. What a loser.

It’s to inoculating him from being investigated for his role in the Burisma Scandal.

Trump can’t go after any of his enemies, lest he be accused of “Retribution”.

Romeny needs to join up with the pretentious men of the democrat party. Stick his nose up in the air with the rest of the white liberal elites... and get the hell out of our party.

Claims he voted his conscience. He forgot one tiny detail. He is there to represent his constituent; NOT to impose his will. McConnell needs to strip him of committee participation. Utah can wait until the budget is balanced before getting any pork.

Good job, a$$wipe. You are now as welcome as a fart in church.

I guess Pointyhead can dream, maybe even dream about 3rd party in 2020. But he’ll have to deal with Trump having a 97% Republican approval - as Weld and Walsh just learned in Iowa.

I voted for Romney’s Democrat opponent in 2018. Just a protest vote, she had no chance of winning.

“””””I am so proud I didn’t vote for Romney in 2016. “””

I didn’t vote for him either. Where I live it wouldn’t matter and there was no way I wanted a guy who elected governor of a state who gave us Kennedy, Kerry, queer marriage and socialized medicine.

I think that Burisma stuff is wishful thinking. A lot of Fake News there, too. Incendiary statements about other politicians/their families involved in Ukraine have been made on social media without evidence backing them up.
