Mayor Raising Taxes Due to Discovery Law Changes (Freeport, NY)
spectrumlocalnews.com ^ | February 10, 2020 | MORGAN MCKAY

It’s an issue that law enforcement and District Attorneys have been raising concerns about for the last few months, that these new criminal justice bills are placing a strain on their already tight budgets. And now the Mayor of the Village of Freeport is saying he has had to find another way to cover these added costs.

"We haven’t raised taxes in the Village of Freeport in 7 years," said Robert Kennedy.

Kennedy is not only the Mayor of the Village of Freeport, he is also President of the State Conference of Mayors. And he says that he has already had to raise taxes in his town by 5.7%.

"It’s officially done and we’ve pierced the tax cap," Kennedy explained.

Kennedy is a Democratic Mayor, but says that the criminal justice bills passed in January failed to provide adequate funding to cover these new mandates. Local police departments must hire additional staff or pay for overtime hours to comply with the new discovery laws.

"If they give us sixty days for discovery I wouldn’t have to keep police officers in providing the discovery on 30-40 thousand cases," Kennedy said.

"We haven’t raised taxes in the Village of Freeport in 7 years," said Robert Kennedy.

And you haven't cut spending in probably 70 years. Maybe, jut maybe, you could solve this issue by cutting other spending for once instead of raising taxes.

I used to live 2 towns up from Freeport - in Webster - and I can tell you that states and big cities have nothing on county and township government in the northeast when it comes to spending and spending and spending. They may say that they work hard to keep costs down, but deep inside, they know that it is a blank check that will always clear the bank of the taxpayers' pockets.

People focusing on bail. Now discovery must be handed to defense in 15 days. ADA snd cops can’t keep up. ADAs are leaving replaced by newbies. And now 30.30 dpeedy trual must be 60 days for misdemeanor 90 for felony or judges must dismiss. Crim defense atty friend switching to personal injury.

Freeport is on the south shore of Long Island ... Webster is all the way up north near Rochester.

Hardly two towns away.

My bad - I was thinking about Fairport - but my point still stands (or does your pointing out my mistake somehow alter the conversation?)...

Webster??? Never heard if it.

It is outside of Rochester in Western New York. And as another Freeper pointed out, Freeport is on Long Island; Fairport is the town just south of Webster.

Ah. My apologies. As I was typing, I wondered if that’s what you were referring to - but hit send before I finished the thought.

Now, I must rest before I go way off the deep end of the snarkiness scale here. To any at whom I’ve snarked today, I apologize.

Not at all. Fairport, Freeport .. whatever ... they're all towns in NYS subject to this new law. Your point is well taken.

The thread is about discovery laws. It makes a difference. Freeport, NY is a village with their own police force. Its 40 percent black I believe. And yes there is crime and bad public school system. Webster, Ny has crime well under the national avr. And might not have as much paperwork issues for duscovery
