Absolutely, 100% true. Its as if a lot of conservatives are concerned about losing their conservative cred, if they criticize business or employers. But this is why the old guard of conservative and Republican are going to fade away. A more populist conservative will emerge who can take votes away from socialists like Bernie Sanders simply by addressing these types of issues.
I agree. This is something done to benefit the company, not the employee. If it needs be done, the company needs to do it on their time.
Employee theft was part of doing business in the auto-parts industry. They turned a blind eye to it unless someone got greedy.
There were guys that would steal a disk brake assy for one wheel every day. He would be ready to sell a complete brake job each week.
Yes, but Amazon had the exact same issue at their warehouses a few years ago. That case went to court and Amazon actually won. However, the exposure of what was going on caused negative publicity and thus caused Amazon to eventually drop the search policy altogether.
Large jewelry chains and many electronics vendors have similar policies, just FYI.
Also, the Apple policy was implemented after employees were found to be walking off with gear.
If it is a condition of employment and it takes the employees time, the employee should be paid for it.
I worked in aerospace and everyone was searched exiting the gate. Lunch boxes opened, backpacks opened, briefcases opened. Everyone was ready for it and it only took a few seconds.
I heard a story about a guy wearing a raincoat on a hot, clear August day. Nothing suspicious here. As he wobbled toward the gate they stopped him. He had a big vice tied between his legs. Not worth losing a job over. But then again he probably not too good at his job either.
True and I could have gone that route but I had the report and this gave me a chance to shove it in their faces.
I agree.
I agree with this one.
Didn’t know that. Did know that Amazon has legendarily bad work conditions in its warehouses, though.
Absolutely... Apple was STUPID to think it would not have to pay people while waiting to be allowed to leave...
That’s fine they can have the policy you can’t leave until you are searched, but you can’t have them clock out and sit around waiting for you to get around to search them on their time before you let them leave.
The problem isn’t the search before you leave policy, its that Apple was not paying their employees while they were sitting around waiting to be searched so they could leave.
I was responding more to the fact of the search being a policy issue that others have raised rather than the pay issue. On the pay issue, I agree with the workers and the court - if you are required to do something to exit work, you should be paid for it. If you have to search me before I leave, I should clock out afterwards, not before.
Upthread there are people protesting the fact that there’s a search at all.
I think those type of rulings have impacted other companies. Last company I worked for would even pay your travel time to the airport if you were traveling.
I feel that if you are traveling as a requirement for your job, that you should be paid for 24/7 for the entire time that you are away. I mean, are you free to go home when you are sitting in a hotel room across the country or halfway around the world? No? Then you need to be paid for that time whether you are technically at work or just eating, or sleeping. You are still away at your employer requirement and not on your own free time.
Well employers requiring searches before leaving is settled law... Employers can make this a condition of employment... If you don’t like it, you are welcome to find another job... but legally if done properly the employer has every right to require it.
I have an employee that always heads to the john for a while after arriving at work. Then it is to the coffee. Cleans the pot. Then he goes to his desk. Thank God he resigned.
When I was young I worked retail at a major store for awhile. We couldn’t carry purses in to work. They issued us clear, see through, zippered bags to carry our personal items. Anyone could see what you had in there and I noticed they would look without actually searching it.
I agree, actually. I had to travel for work for a whole month a few years ago. It didn’t make sense to hop on a plane home every weekend, and it was cheaper to sit me in a hotel room than fly me back and forth.
But, yeah, I was away from home, family, etc.
I can’t imagine how people travel for work all of the time.
“Why work someplace where you have to be searched?”
Airports, schools, banks, drug companies, military bases, CIA headquarters, NSA headquarters, court houses...
