President Donald Trump likes to claim credit for the number of Americans who have stopped receiving food stamps since he entered office. In July 2018, he said 3.5 million had fallen from the rolls; the next spring, 5 million had. In his State of the Union speech this month, the number had grown to 7 million.
Democrats say those figures only show Trump has pushed struggling Americans off public assistance by pressing to restrict eligibility for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Medicaid and other programs.
For now, the evidence supports Trumps contention that an improving economy is more responsible for falling food stamp rolls than Trumps attempts to limit access. Moving forward, however, Trumps initiatives are poised to deny assistance to millions of Americans who would previously have been eligible.
The decline in poverty levels since the end of the Great Recession has been the single largest factor in recent SNAP participation declines, said Dottie Rosenbaum, a researcher at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a liberal research organization in Washington. This shows the program is working as designed.
In an election year, when the strength of the economy promises to be the presidents main pitch to voters, how the decline in public assistance rolls is perceived may have political significance. Trump and his administration are casting his economic policies as a boon to low-income Americans, while Democrats are seeking to paint him as cruel to the poor.
Under the last administration, more than 10 million people were added to the food stamp rolls, the president said in his State of the Union address. Under my administration, 7 million Americans have come off food stamps, and 10 million people have been lifted off welfare.

Roughly half this country no longer sees that as a good thing.
No he gets no credit. He gets the blame! Millions of deadbeats are now forced to work for a living. Bastard!
No matter how much you work to improve reality, you are up against people who offer !!Utopia!!
Its a forever problem.
The Trump program works - tighten up immigration to open up blue collar jobs; cut back generous welfare benefits and - surprise surprise - people get off the dole and start working!!! The Trump program is a Hell of a lot better than the Obama & Chamber of Commerce Republican program of mass immigration and putting a big chunk of the domestic population on generous welfare benefits to live out the rest of their lives as government wards.
No because that’s the exact opposite of the left’s goal. Their dream is to have everyone on welfare. The worst thing for them is to have any major issue solved or at least reduced.

Does he get credit for removing millions from the welfare rolls?
No, silly. He gets blamed for his cruelty.
Of course not, we’re living the “Obama economy” (ducks head).
Reminds me of when Mike Dukakis was governor of Massachusetts. In his first term, he raised the sales tax. After he lost and his replacement was worse, he ran again and won. He then put the sales tax back to what it was before, then campaigned that he was cutting taxes.
The sad part is that a lot of Mass-holes believed him and re-elected him.
Fraud is likely still alive.
