Thousands of Americans voluntarily self-quarantine after returning from China
NBC ^ | 19 February 2020 | Erika Edwards

Thousands of travelers who have returned to the United States after recent trips to China are spending nearly half a month behind closed doors, under voluntary self-quarantine, even though they do not pose any immediate coronavirus-related health risk to others. These are not people sick with COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. They have had no fever and no cough, and they aren't necessarily being tested for the virus.

Instead, they simply traveled in China within the past few weeks and have since been flagged by health officials at one of the 11 airports nationwide through which all U.S. citizens and their families flying from China are being routed. And now they're being asked to stay home for 14 days — the maximum amount of time it's thought to take to develop the illness after being exposed — limiting physical contact with others as much as possible and watching for symptoms.

In cities all over the US, there are people who are supposed to self-quarantine because they recently returned from an area with a high infection rate.

What? They don’t need the federal government rousting them out at six a.m. like Roger Stone?

In every state, and most cities.

If there is a college, it is going to have Chinese expats running from the pestilence.

Do not forget that.

My next door neighbor is returning from North Korea in two weeks. He has been on a contract job in Seoul for 6 months. Not how I want to greet him.

This article is full of sh!t. People returning from infected areas are blocked by travel bans, or let in under highly controlled conditions.

The idea that thousands are just waltzing back in and self-quarantining is ludicrous and dies not comport with reality.

What would be the motive for publishing such misinformation, other than the obvious one: a fake news narrative intended to suggest that the Trump administration is clueless, cavalier and out of touch?

Agreed. And I suspect the State Department letting Americans who were supposed to be quarantined ride in generic airline flights home was intentional - to spread the disease.

Personally I plan to self quarantine this weekend. Haven't been to China in over 15 years but half the shxt in my house and vehicles have stuff made in China. To be safe I'll be using alcohol as a disinfectant both internally and externally to ensure eradication of the virus. I'll be using only American made Alcohol like MERICA Burbon Whiskey:

and Redneck Riviera Whisky

I'll wash this down with a few Yuenglings while BBQ'ing some nice steaks.

“This article is full of sh!t.”

hardly. only non-citizens are banned from flying in from china, but many of those simply fly to an intermediate country, fly here, and then lie about their actual original location ...

i spoke to a good friend of mine in San Francisco, and she said 500 people a day are flying in from China ... maybe that’s why San Fran declared a state of emergency ...

[“they simply traveled in China within the past few weeks”

WHY?]

Exchange students and businessmen looking in on their suppliers. Not everything can be done on the internet. Many of these travel arrangements were probably booked before the Chinese government began its draconian quarantine measures.

There are hundreds of thousands of Chinese students stateside. But even a decade ago, there were 25,000 US students in China as part of various courses of study. Some would presumably have returned stateside to avoid the risk of infection.

https://www.iie.org/Research-and-Insights/Publications/US-Students-in-China
[For the past decade, the number of U.S students studying in China for academic credit from their U.S. home institution has risen at an average of 18 percent per year, from 3,291 students in 2000 to 15,647 in 2010/11, according to the latest Open Doors Report, published annually by the Institute of International Education in partnership with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Since 2007, China has been the most popular study abroad destination outside of Western Europe, and one of the top five destinations for U.S. students studying abroad for academic credit from their college or university in the United States.

The new report is based on a study conducted by IIE from October 2011 to September 2012 with support from the Ford Foundation. The survey of U.S. higher education institutions was sent to 1,680 accredited U.S. colleges and universities and 563 valid responses were received, yielding a response rate of 34 percent. All types of institutions responded to the survey, ranging from doctoral level universities to specialized institutions of higher education. Data was also gathered from the China Scholarship Council and education provider institutions.

Findings from the report reveal that there were over 11,000 additional students engaged in education-related activities in China, beyond those normally counted in the Open Doors study abroad survey. The current study indicates that the kind of for-credit study that has been reported by the U.S. campuses now represents about 59 percent of all U.S. students in China, while another 41 percent of students are undertaking other types of educational activities. As this is a pilot study, including responses from over 500 U.S. campuses, these numbers are almost certainly an undercount. It is likely that there are many more U.S. students who go to China on their own, often over school breaks, who are not being tracked or reported by higher education institutions at this time.[

Thank you for some sanity.

There are many FReepers who think this is a hoax and anything that does not align with their worldview is derided.

many of those simply fly to an intermediate country, fly here,

My Nephew(a Natural born US Citizen) lives in Hong Kong. He flew to Thailand and from there to LA. This was about 10 days ago. Stopping direct flights is helpful, but it's not a ban.

And how the F##k do they know they are not a risk?
No one has tested any of them. We KNOW that people can develop the disease after 21-24 day incubation periods, but are infective before that.
