Trump Refusing To Rubber Stamp FISA Renewal, Demands Post-Russia Surveillance Reforms

Law raises concerns about extent feds can spy on Americans

President Trump has told congressional Republican leaders that he will not support a clean reauthorization of surveillance laws without significant reforms to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court system that was abused during the Russia collusion probe, a senior White House official says.

The surveillance provisions are set to expire on March 15, and the White House indicated to Republican leaders Tuesday that it would support only a temporary, 30-day extension to allow Congress to iron out the reforms.

House Democratic leaders have indicated publicly they are open to bipartisan compromise.

“Just got back from the White House. @realDonaldTrump made it abundantly clear that he will NOT accept a clean reauthorization of the Patriot Act without significant FISA reform! I agree with him!” Kentucky GOP Sen Rand Paul tweeted Tuesday.

Trump and other Republicans have expressed frustration with reported abuses of the FISA program including some -- outlined in a report by the Department of Justice’s Office Of The Inspector General -- by the FBI in its surveillance of Carter Page, a former 2016 Trump campaign adviser.

Paul told Fox Business he suggested to the president that one reform include banning the use of FISA courts -- “which is a foreign intelligence court” -- to spy on American citizens.

Paul instead suggests that intelligence gatherers be required to get approval from a “Constitutional, Article 3 court” to surveil American citizens.

“This would protect Americans from the abuses that happened to the Trump campaign,” Paul told Fox Business host Lou Dobbs. “But these abuses could happen to Republicans or Democrats if we have biased people in either the FBI or the intelligence agencies, so I think the best reform is let’s take Americans out of FISA, and let’s keep the foreign surveillance court targeted towards..

FISA should be eliminated.

Secret courts have no place in a free country.

Our Man Don

The one who was the VICTIM of the outrageous, despicable abuse of the US intelligence assets, NEVER intended to be used against Americans, much less the elected President

The entire American Stasi-plex should be dismantled over this

I wouldn’t give them the 30 days. They spent that time on the coup already.

Time to collect the interest now ...

The institutionalized abuse of the FISA court was baked in the cake when the Patriot Act was signed. Well intentioned and all that feel-good talk doesn’t stop the tyrants in government from abusing anything and everything they can.

Bravo!

Trump’s situation, what they did to him - it shows just what they can do to ANY of us if we don’t agree with the elitist lefty fascists. And as proven by their weaponizing of the IRS against political dissidents, they will use this against Americans again.

Maybe we need to get rid of secret courts altogether.

Trump has to fire Barr now or he will pay a huge price. Barr wants to hang drapes and keep right on going with FISA as is.

For the sake of Pete, the government expended 2/3 of its energy, focus, and resources on itself. Who’s got time for enemies or other lower priorities?

Paul instead suggests that intelligence gatherers be required to get approval from a "Constitutional, Article 3 court" to surveil American citizens.

Congress established FISC, which makes it a bona-fide Article 3 court. All of the judges assigned are senate approved for life, literally part of the Article 3 court system.

Congress could establish the same secretive system (it has established ways to deal with classified info in criminal and civil courts) that exists for FISC, and assign it to say the District Court for DC.

The problem though is not in the system. It is that so much happens outside the system. The system is there to legitimize the illegitimate. No amount of law passing will curtail the snooping excesses. Like gun control does not contain the criminals, laws do not contain the government.

The government is out of control, it is incapable of controlling itself, and it has proven this over and over and over.
