Florida Senate confirms Parkland parent Ryan Petty’s nomination to state Board of Education, despite concerns about his social media posts

A Parkland parent was confirmed by the Florida Senate Friday to serve on the state Board of Education, despite concerns about his social media past.

Ryan Petty became a prominent school safety advocate after he lost his 14-year-old daughter Alaina in the 2018 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Petty said he’s grateful for an opportunity to serve on the board, which sets policies and regulations for the state’s school systems.

“I’m fully engaged and will move forward with a sense of urgency as Florida’s students and educators deserve,” he said in a prepared statement.

Some Democratic senators had concerns about Petty’s social media history and his failure to win election to the Broward County School Board.

Sen. Perry Thurston, D-Fort Lauderdale, said he thinks there were better candidates for the job who had experience working in the educational system. He said he found Petty’s social media history to be troubling.

“Over the course of years, he has made insulting, sarcastic, demeaning remarks about blacks, about Jews, about Muslims, about Hispanics, about the LGBT community, liberals, individuals who are graduates of our public education system,” he said.

Ryan Petty doesn't blame guns for his daughters death. He blames policies, like those at Parkland, which ignored threats from known miscreants.

Hopefully the school board will have someone who isn't a knee-jerk liberal who blames everything on guns and only demands gun control and the same liberal policies that took the life of his daughter, Alaina.

I’ve rarely seen someone’s social media posts help them in a big way at some juncture.

It’s been MANY TIMES that I’ve seen it hurt someone.

I don’t know what this guy said about blacks, hispanics, gays, Jews, etc.

And I know people spout too much without thinking on social media

The Broward School district is notorious for calculatedly labeling kids with ‘various disorders’....but only those disorders that meet the criteria to collect additional tax dollars from the state and federal government.......Obama's addlepated plan to keep minorities off police roles.

Once the school gets approved, Broward does not spend the $$$tax dollars on the kid. They mainstream all these troubled kids and collect the $$$ to enrich the system....and fill their own pockets. It’s an expensive scam.

The primary aim is to meet criteria to collect funding from the state and federal government.
Once approved, Broward does not spend the tax dollars on kids. They mainstream troubled kids and pocket the $$$$ to enrich their system.
