Government and Media Responses to Pandemics, Then and Now
American Thinker ^ | March 19, 2020 | William Sullivan

In the end, over 60 million Americans were infected by H1N1. It led to 273,304 hospitalizations and 12,469 deaths in the U.S. alone.

Yet Americans generally just went about their lives, with no holistic directives from President Obama or any of the state governors that schools, restaurants, or businesses be closed, or that private gatherings should be limited to a particular size. One can hardly remember it even being news at all, and if one does, it is remembered as casual warnings to cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze and stay away from work and others if you feel ill.

In 2009 a R President, with a booming economy, despised by the left and MSM, with entrenched DC opposition, was not up for re-election.

Hushhhh Don’t you realize that the Almighty Kwanza king of the medical and media empires took it upon himself to contain any reporting of that nasty bug. This is so much more serious, just ask Chuckkie Schumer or Yahoo snooze. We are doomed if we don’t get the swamp drainer out of D.C. ( excuse me while I throw up ).

And that the virus of today comes from a country where many of those people that you speak of have very wealthy business interests there and very much fear all of that apparatus there coming down as that would seriously threaten those interests.

H1N1, the swine flu, was less lethal than the seasonal flu. COVID-19 is 10x more lethal than the seasonal flu.

So the comparison is not valid.

It took Lazy Obama 6 months to respond. And when he finally did, the MSM praised him.

The MSM is Comcast, Disney, and now ATT.

Telecom must not also control the news/message. Hopefully the DOJ will take action.

Being asymptomatic and easily transmitted also takes things up a notch or two. Given that we’ve sacrificed tens of millions of innocent little ones on altar of sexual freedom over a period of decades, an affliction like this one is the least we should expect.

“In the end, over 60 million Americans were infected by H1N1. It led to 273,304 hospitalizations and 12,469 deaths in the U.S. alone.”
Those 12,469 people died from April 12 2009 to April 10 2010. That is an average of 24 deaths per day. There were 57 deaths in the US from Covid19 YESTERDAY. There were 627 deaths in Italy TODAY, and Italy has 1/5 the population of the US. If Covid19 spreads in the US as it has in Italy, that implies more than 3,000 deaths PER DAY in the US.
3,000 times 365 is 1,095,000. Does anyone still think Covid19 is not more serious than H1N1?

“H1N1, the swine flu, was less lethal than the seasonal flu. COVID-19 is 10x more lethal than the seasonal flu.”

And yet the swine flu killed the young and healthy. Wuhan corona virus overwhelmingly attacks those with major health issues.

This American Ostrich article, which was written yesterday, says there are 4,482 US Covid19 cases as of Tuesday. There are 17,729 confirmed US cases as of 4pm Friday. That represents a “trend” I would say.
I’m glad Trump is smarter than a lot of the people who voted for him e.g. the reliably conservative American Thinker.
I encourage everyone not to understate the seriousness of this virus, or if you are going to argue it is not serious, have some valid arguments and facts not this type of nonsense.

COVID-19 is 10x more lethal than the seasonal flu.

Pure, unadulterated, unprovable b.s. The actual CFR cannot be known, cannot even be estimated, with current data.

Coronavirus Is 10 Times More Lethal Than Seasonal Flu, Fauci Says

The WHO says the case mortality rate is 3.4 which is 34 times more lethal than seasonal flu.

The numbers have been available on Worldometers. It's not that hard to make estimates.

They don’t have perfect information on either the flu or the Coronavirus. But they know how many get sick enough to seek help. So they can make educated estimates.

They also have data points like the cruise ship where they know exactly how many got infected. And South Korea which tested over 200,000 people provides an excellent data point as well.

He has enough information to make the comparison to the flu.

And all of that information is pointing to this being between 10x and 30x worse than the flu.

None of it points to it being less lethal than the flu.

H1N1, the swine flu, was less lethal than the seasonal flu. COVID-19 is 10x more lethal than the seasonal flu. So the comparison is not valid.

Which flu, and what do you mean more lethal? What is the mortality rate in the US for Covid-19 in the light of the estimated infected in the US (not Italy), even with the Wash. nursing home and cruise ship outliers? Asking, not contending.

During the 2017-2018 season, the percentage of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza (P&I) was at or above the epidemic threshold for 16 consecutive weeks. Nationally, mortality attributed to P&I exceeded 10.0% for four consecutive weeks, peaking at 10.8% during the week ending January 20, 2018, (https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/season/flu-season-2017-2018.htm) with older Americans dying at a rate of 169 Americans a day, or seven people per hour. (https://www.aarp.org/health/conditions-treatments/info-2018/older-flu-deaths-rising.html

And according to another CDC estimate for 2017-2018 season 80,000 people died of the flu in U.S, the highest death toll in 40 years. (https://www.usnews.com/news/health-care-news/articles/2018-09-27/cdc-80-000-people-died-of-flu-complications-last-season-in-us)

From 12 April 2009 to 10 April 2010, we estimate that approximately 60.8 million cases (range: 43.3-89.3 million), 274,304 hospitalizations (195,086-402,719), and 12,469 deaths (8868-18,306) occurred in the United States due to pH1N1. Eighty-seven percent of deaths occurred in those under 65 years of age with children and working adults having risks of hospitalization and death 4 to 7 times and 8 to 12 times greater, respectively, than estimates of impact due to seasonal influenza covering the years 1976-2001. In our study, adults 65 years of age or older were found to have rates of hospitalization and death that were up to 75% and 81%, respectively, lower than seasonal influenza.
