I’ve got my stash of Plaquenil.

I just tossed my expired stash out about two months ago. Been in closet for a while and was expired at least two years. From what my doc friends tell me, most meds will still work after they expire except antibiotics and birth control. Wishing I would have kept it now.

“...there are very few in Africa, where malaria drugs have been used for many years..”

Excellent add-on to the excellent thread topic.

The suggestions and questions from FReepers are a big reason I love this place.

Well yes, actually they do know how it works.

Hydroxychloroquine impairs the ability of the virus to replicate by allowing zink, which interferes with the replication process, to more easily penetrate the cell wall. Hydroxychloroquine is a ionophore that acts as a gateway for the Zinc ions to more easily pass through the cell wall and prevent the virus from hijacking the RNA sequencing mechanism of the infected cell to replicate itself.

Here is something you should also know; it is often not the virus that is killing people, it is an overactive immune response which causes what is called a “cytokine storm” that kills them. A cytokine storm is when the body’s immune system becomes over-stimulated and, in this case, floods the lungs with so many pro-inflammatory cytokines that healthy cells as well as infected cells are damaged, causing the lungs to fill with fluid and often killing the patient.

Hydroxychloroquine regulates the immune response and prevents too many pro-inflammatory cytokines from being released at one time. That is why hydroxychloroquine is prescribed for people with autoimmune diseases such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. HCQ helps protect healthy cells from an overactive immune system and, in the process of treating the coronavirus, helps prevent the lungs from being damaged.

Azithromycin is prescribed with the hydroxychloroquine to control secondary infections attacking a compromised respiratory system. It also appears to have antiviral properties. The pairing of these two drugs is showing immense promise and seems to be the best immediate hope of curing those infected with SARS-CoV-2.

Hydroxychloroquine has been on the market for 65 years and is in every pharmacy in America. It is used to not only treat malaria, but also lupus and autoimmune disease. The media and some doctors are telling us that they don’t know if HCQ is safe...despite the fact that we’ve prescribed it for six decades and know everything there is to know about the drug, it’s side effects and its interaction with other drugs.

Hydtoxychloroquine is on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) List of Essential Medicines, “the safest and most effective medicines needed in a health system”.

Here’s a great presentation that explains exactly why hydrochloric when is so effective against the SARS-CoV-2 virus;

Dr. Roger Seheult, Pulmonologist and Associate Professor at UC-Riverside, explains exactly how Hydroxychloroquine allows Zinc to penetrate infected cells to prevent the Covid-19 virus from replicating. Extremely interesting and an absolute must-watch!!!

This drug is NOT a vaccine to prevent infection with the particular virus.

Rather, it ha been used as a restorative medication for one that has already cantracted the disease. The dosages for assisting the cure of a virus-infected patienr may be different, and its combination with collateral use of an antibiotic against pneumal bacteria may not coincide with lupus or malarial treatments.

The results proposed by this article might thus be confusing or open to question.

Well, you’re right that it is not a vaccine, but the jury is still out on whether it’s a prophylactic. Lab results as well as anecdotal evidence indicates that it is.

And if you’ve seen any of the dosage recommendations being used by both those that are treating the coronavirus with hydroxychloroquine and those that are being treated for lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, you would know that they are essentially the same, roughly 400 mg per day with some variation.

Some doctors are also using a zinc supplement paired with the hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin to better take advantage of the ionophoric qualities of HCQ.

I have attached a lab study that indicates hydroxychloroquine indeed does act as a prophylactic:

Here I have attached a video that walks you through in a very detailed manner why hydroxychloroquine prevents the virus from replicating as well as preventing entry into the cell.

>>If you look at the world distribution of virus cases, there are very few in Africa, where malaria drugs have been used for many years.<<

I thought that too, at first, but apparently chloroquine isn’t effective against malaria any longer as the disease has mutated since it was developed.

It wouldn’t hurt, though to find out whether it’s still generally taken, especially in Africa and in India. India, especially, had a very slow start to their Wuhan Flu cases, possibly due to lack of testing?

It doesn’t have to be a vaccine. It can still prevent infection, however, so long as one is on it. Assuming it does work prophylactically, having it onboard would be sufficient. Quit taking it and you become vulnerable to the virus again.

Not that this is happening, but it doesn’t have to be a vaccine (which would impart long-term protection without needing to take it on a prolonged basis.)

First, that’s a good idea. You’d think with everyone’s medical records now online, it would be possible to answer that question fairly quickly. If someone at the CDC has access to all medical records (and they should, if they don’t) they could search for all patient records with a lupus or rheumatoid arthritis and cross check them with diagnosed Wuhan Flu cases.

Alternatively, they could put out a request to all major hospitals in hard hit areas and have them do their searches and then collect the results.

On the topic of the drugs serving as a prophylactic, while I do think healthcare workers should be given it without having to show symptoms (because they’re most at risk, and because it keeps them on the job—if they show symptoms, they won’t be allowed to keep working), I think most people should be medicated only after showing symptoms.

Assuming the drug combination works, that would prevent hospitalization, but it would also allow asymptomatic cases to continue to build herd immunity which, short of a vaccine, is the only way this virus is eventually brought to heel. Of course the most vulnerable should continue to self-isolate until that point is reached.

Don't get me wrong. I strongly believe that this medication can strengthen a person's defenses such that they can get better, quickly, when thet have no other overriding weakening condition. It was only a coupleof months ago that i made my physician prescribe my the azithromycin to get me out of a persistent respiratory condition that I could not get rid of with self-medication. I believe that it would be criminal to deny a virus-stricken patient (any virus, corona or not) the HCQ at this point, together with ZithroMax pack.

What disturbs me is the possible confusion of a vaccine that prevents infection with the HCQ treatment that only improves the patient's chances of recovery from the infection.

A second, possibly a third agent is often added to a quinine derivative drug for Malaria. The protozoan mutated and gained the ability to dodge the effect of hydroxychloroquine on it’s metabolic processes. The drug combination restores potency to shutting down the Malaria.
