Trump fires Michael Atkinson, intel watchdog who handled Ukraine complaint

President Trump on Friday night fired Michael Atkinson, the inspector general for the intelligence community who had deemed “urgent” a whistleblower’s complaint about the president’s actions on aid to Ukraine.

In a letter to the top Republican and Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, the president said “it is vital that I have the fullest confidence in the appointees serving as inspectors general.”

“That is no longer the case with regard to this inspector general,” Mr. Trump said.

The president said the firing would take effect in 30 days and he will nominate a new candidate, who must be confirmed by the Senate.

Mr. Atkinson was nominated by Mr. Trump and started in the post in May 2018. In August 2019, Mr. Atkinson received the whistleblower’s complaint alleging that the president had abused his power in soliciting help from Ukraine to undermine Democratic presidential front-runner Joseph R. Biden.

Mr. Atkinson conducted an initial investigation and found the whistleblower’s complaint was “credible” and “urgent,” a decision that started a chain of events leading to Mr. Trump’s impeachment by House Democrats in December 2019. The president denied he had done anything wrong and called it another “witch hunt” by Democrats.

The Republican-led Senate acquitted the president in a trial in February.

Mr. Atkinson had previously served at the Justice Department for 15 years.

And from January 7

House Intel Republicans investigating inspector general handling of whistleblower complaint

House Intelligence Committee Republicans are investigating the intelligence community inspector general for his handling of the Ukraine whistleblower complaint, including potential inconsistencies in his testimony before the panel as part of the Trump impeachment inquiry, Fox News has learned.

Committee Ranking Member Devin Nunes, R-Calif., first told investigative reporter Sara Carter earlier this week that the panel has an “active investigation” into Intelligence Community Inspector General Michael Atkinson.

A source familiar with the committee’s investigation on Tuesday went into further detail, telling Fox News that Republicans are looking at the ICIG’s handling of the whistleblower complaint that sparked the impeachment inquiry into President Trump; the veracity of his testimony about the whistleblower complaint; and the explanations he offered for changes made to the ICIG’s guidance on accepting second-hand information.

In August, Atkinson received a complaint from an individual raising concerns about Trump’s July 25 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in which he pressed Kiev to launch investigations into the dealings of former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden in Ukraine, as well as issues related to the 2016 presidential election.

The president’s request came after millions of dollars in U.S. military aid to Ukraine had been frozen, which Democrats argue shows a “quid pro quo” arrangement. Trump has denied any wrongdoing.

Republicans for weeks have complained that the whistleblower made contact with Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff's, D-Calif., staff in advance -- though Schiff has downplayed the nature of that contact.

What took them so long??

The firing won’t take affect for 30 days.

I sure as poop hope they’ve locked the guy out of his office and taken away his badge.

Otherwise, he could cause a whole lot of misery in the remaining 29 days (as of today).

Wonder how much the DNC paid him for his bogus recommendation to trust a “whistleblower” who had been plotting with Schiff?

The first guy to know after Trump and a flunky is the IT guy who locks accounts and shuts off crackberries.

Yeah I was gobsmacked when I read that.

He should have been escorted out like those Bobbsey Twins.

Yes I do hope he was locked out of his office.

He conspired with Schiff to create a fake whistleblower.

The WB and the fake boughtandpaidfor by Hillary dossier were the basis for the faux impeachment.

It’s an odd comment on our society as a whole when the nation’s most carefully guarded secrets is “How the Rich got that way.”
