Addis Ababa (AFP) - The chairman of the African Union Commission on Wednesday defended the World Health Organization (WHO) and its leadership from attacks by US President Donald Trump, who on Tuesday threatened to cut funding for the UN body.
"Surprised to learn of a campaign by the US govt against WHO's global leadership," Moussa Faki Mahamat said in a Twitter post.
"The African Union fully supports WHO and Dr Tedros," he added, referring to the WHO's director, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, an Ethiopian.
Faki was later joined by Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Namibian President Hage Geingob, who took to Twitter with messages of their own supporting the WHO.
Speaking to reporters Tuesday, Trump said the WHO "seems very biased toward China" and that his government "will look at ending funding".
The US is the WHO's biggest funding source.
Trump specifically criticised the WHO's advice against curtailing international travel to curb the coronavirus, which first spread from China.

If that were only true, then the support the US wouldn’t be so critical.
They can keep Tedros. They’ll just have to get the rest of their funding from China since they’re doing their bidding anyway.

No doubt the Chinese approached the Director of WHO, and said:
“You are a man of great talent and worth. The pittance you are paid by the UN in no way compensates fairly a man of your talent. Please accept this additional stipend of $1 miilion dollars annually deposited by a grateful Chinese government in your discreet Swiss bank account.”
My only criticism of the Trump stand on WHO might be that it should expand to a more general end of support for all aspects of the UN culture. There needs to be a freeing up of the developed world from these international bastions of socialism and dubious economics. They have been permitted to stagger along in a state of total disarray for many years, nobody sane really has any idea why we support this or pay for it. And the time has come to end the farce and rely on more rational forums of international co-operation (which either don’t exist, or have limited scope at present).

Oh yes, that country when back in 1985, Bob Geldof and other musicians begged us to give money to buy all of that grain for that country, which was either used by the communist dictatorship there to trade for guns or let to rot in the ports.
