The Coronavirus Is Exposing Little Tyrants All Over The Country
The Federalist ^ | 4/13/2020 | John Daniel Davidson

There’s nothing like a crisis to bring clarity. The response of some mayors and governors to the coronavirus pandemic in recent days has made it clear they think they have unlimited and arbitrary power over their fellow citizens, that they can order them to do or not do just about anything under the guise of protecting public health.

We’ve now witnessed local and state governments issue decrees about what people can and cannot buy in stores, arrest parents playing with their children in public parks, yank people off public buses at random, remove basketball rims along with private property, ticket churchgoers, and in one case try—and fail—to chase down a lone runner on an empty beach. All of this, we’re told, is for our own good.

Were I producing campaign ads, I'd be outting these tyrants as an example of a one party, Democrat government.

These one party governments are pervasive in small elections as city governments to states to now possibly Federal positions.

To me, there is great opportunity to play on people who are finding tyranny not very palatable.

It tempts one to make exceptions to the “No Mass Executions” rule.

All Politics are local. Make sure you know your local tyrants.

Most politicians don’t go into politics because they want to leave people alone.

Extortion by Public Officers

The essence of extortion by a public officer is the oppressive use of official position to obtain a fee. The officer falsely claims authority to take that to which he or she is not lawfully entitled. This is known as acting under color of office. For example, a highway department officer who collects money from a tax delinquent automobile owner in excess of the authorized amount on the pretense of collecting a fine is extorting money under color of office. The victim, although consenting to payment, is not doing so voluntarily but is yielding to official authority.

There are four basic ways in which a public officer commits extortion. The officer might demand a fee not allowed by law and accept it under the guise of performing an official duty. He or she might take a fee greater than that allowed by law. In this case the victim must at least believe that he or she is under an obligation to pay some amount. A third method is for the officer to receive a fee before it is due. The crime is committed regardless of whether the sum taken is likely to become due in the future. It is not criminal, however, for an officer to collect a fee before it is due if the person paying so requests. Finally, extortion may be committed by the officer’s taking a fee for services that are not performed. The service refrained from must be one within the official capacity of the officer in order to constitute extortion.

This is a good thing because they are exposing themselves before they have the strength to make it stick, or at least I hope so.

People need to fight back now but also must remember all this and do something about these “little tyrants” after the present situation clears up.

Hillsborough county in Florida pushed me over the edge.

We now have 9:00 pm to 5:00 am curfew because some idiots had large parties over the weekend and did not adhere to social distancing.

I emailed the little petty tyrants today on the county commission who passed the new regulations and ripped him a new one.

I will make myself a huge PITA until they revoke the curfew. Thursday they vote on MANDATORY masks in public.

I'm a freaking adult that can keep people safe.

What is disappointing — and not a little frightening — is there are indications that law enforcement is supporting the edicts and commands of these petty tyrants.

We had a block party last weekend. Lots of loud music and good food....BUT, each house (4) brought a table to their front yards and stayed in their own yards. We communicated with face time, and took turns with our boom boxes blasting out whatever each wanted on their own. one at a time. We bbq whatever we individually wanted, and had balloons up, and had a PARTY! Big US flags. I hope it pissed off our officials.

I'm sure they would prefer you sit in the corner sucking your thumb afraid to breath the fresh air.

Are you in Florida ?
