White House officials said Friday that states have enough COVID-19 tests to proceed to phase one of the Trump administrations plan to restart the economy.
Vice President Mike Pence told reporters at a briefing of the White House Coronavirus Task Force that our best scientists and health experts assess that states today have enough tests to implement the criteria of phase one if they choose to do so.
Pences remarks come as the administration faces pressure to increase testing capacity, seen as key to faster lifting of lockdowns.
Meanwhile, protests have erupted across the country amid record job losses and social anguish fueled by stay-at-home directives and business shutdowns.
Charting a path for Americas return to economic normalcy, President Donald Trump on Thursday unveiled the White House plan to reopen in three phases, which lays out criteria for each stage and gives governors the final say in lifting restrictions.
The criteria include decreased reports of influenza-like illnesses and COVID-like syndromic cases within a 14-day period, decreasing documented cases, and that hospitals must be able to treat all patients with issues.
Phase one is for areas that have met the criteria once. It would still require vulnerable individuals to shelter in place and for people to avoid unnecessary travel as well as gatherings of more than 10 people.
Phase two is for regions that have met the criteria twice and have not seen a rebound in infections. It still calls for social distancing but removes non-essential travel restrictions.
Phase three is for places that have met the criteria three times, with no rebounds, and broadly resumes business and social activity with few constraints, also letting vulnerable individuals back into public spaces.

Alright, Vice President Pence, let’s do this!
It may be a little too easy to twist the arms of hospital administrators to show that there has been no decrease or some such chicanery.
But it is a great start and I am glad.
Forget the tests. How much HCQ do we have? If not enough, get going on it.
The problem with numbers is people.
In our current situation, I really hope people set any agenda aside and follow the criteria as well as they possibly can, because the virus remains a legit threat.
This is a solid plan, and we should proceed with it. I think asking us to take these measures to flatten the curve was a proper course, and we did it. To try to extend it into the unforeseeable future until there is a vaccine or until people feel 100% safe is utter nonsense though.
We face it now.
I still got to be very careful, but to those ready to roll, roll out! I will support them all with prayers and in whatever other way I can.
Forgive my memory if I should know this already, but I didn’t know you had a condition that puts you at more risk.
I hope it is under control, whatever it is, which is not my business.
I’ll say some prayers.
Exactly the wife and I are in a higher risk group so we will be cautious and those in the lower risk can get out there and pick up the pieces while better solutions come. We can do this.
I’ve got the top three.
Diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. Beyond that, I’ve had two heart attacks and have two stents. All of these conditions are under control though, but I have not had my lab work done, and I’m due.
I’m in pretty good shape on the outside, but the inside... I’m an old man.
But that’s alright, I can work from my home, and I’m just going to maintain measures in my own life to try and remain safe, and I am going to support and pray for all others, because I love America and Americans, and we have no choice, we have to try.
If, in the end, we die, then we die free and not under the orders of petty, tin horn dictators. To Hell with that.
I guess I missed it, but what exactly are they testing for? Viral load/positive covid19 or antibodies? Both? Who is being tested? Only those who go to doctor or hospital with proper symptoms or folks who may have had asymptomatic or nild cases etc that didn’t make them seek medical diagnosis?
I want to know where the nation stands regarding herd/community immunity, not necessarily only active cases.
The former tells us where we have been and are going, the latter seems to be an in the moment snapshot of bad news. (Which is only good for govt policy, not public liberty and economic development .
Yep. It’s time for a nation to rally!
Well it goes without saying I hope very much everything stays under control and you stay well.
Live for nothing or die for something.
It was a line from Rambo, the 2008 movie. Whatever country it was about in Asia, the rebels fighting a brutal regime there took on the slogan.
Copies of the movie there were illegal but the black market got them out there.
“Rather die for something than live for nothing”
Reminds me of a line from a really unusual and good song, “Yuve yuve yu” by The Hu, featuring Danny.
That line was the only way I was even able to identify who sings this song, because they never ever say on the radio who it is, and I can’t really understand any of The Hu’s lyrics.
Awesome song! Mongolian throat singing.
The Hu from Mongolia? I hope their drummer fared better than Keith Moon. :)
Yup, that’s where they are from. Dudes are damn good too.
They’ve done some cross overs with various American performers, but I like their music just with them.
They sound pretty good. Not a big fan of that hard head-banging style but it’s good.
Reminds me of a Maori Haka chant. Badass warriors!
Yep, Wolf Totem is excellent.
Here is Yuve Yu without the American singer. I do like this version better.
These guys don’t need any help at all.
This is primal battle music, just incredible.
That was excellent! Both the music and the video. Thanks.
Thanks for that link!
