They have nobody to blame but themselves... They failed to protect their workers and now they need to close plants because their workforce is full of Corona... They should have masked and gloved all their workers immediately... They didn’t and now they’ll be out of business.

Very true.
Now that I have a nice nest egg built up (a bit less “nice” due to recent events, but I can sit tight for a year or ten) I’ve found that money tends to solve “problems” quite nicely.

Pay the workers enough and watch how quickly they become motivated to show up again.

I monitored TV to some degree, or as much as I could stomach, but found absolutely none of their propaganda compelling. It was very sophomoric and not grounded in science. If anyone was truly swayed by a media that has been proven many times over as being nothing more than lying propagandists then I must deduce that they must not be very intelligent.

That’s right and that is why I take this story with a grain of salt.

I dumped TV in 1997, but in the early part of the century I found myself in a job that caused me to travel all over the country. The result was that I saw a lot of snippets of local news on TV. My conscious response was this:

They are all the same and talk as though their audience is in middle school. I kinda watched it with an MST 3000 frame of mind. It was a lot of fun. One fun thing is to turn off the sound and watch how they use their facial expressions to tell you how to “feel” about a story.

But yeah, “news for kids” is how I see it.

“Then the federal government should seize the damn plants and get things running.”

I agree. If it’s a staffing issue then the feds (I’m thinking military, maybe a special squad from the Corps of Engineers) need to have people who are properly trained to do it. Or, they could hire contractors to move in and do it. There’s really no excuse for this not getting done.

It is prudent for Americans to invest in independent farm industries so there is not a reliance on Global Conglomerates. China also owns vast acreage of farmland.

Hard to believe all the comments regarding politics.

I live in a beef and hog producing state. Somehow the comments here fail to understand the point that thousands and thousands of cattle and hogs are either being or facing being euthanized (killed and destroyed for those of you living in Rio Linda). Ranchers and farmers that raise the livestock can’t continually producing and feeding the livestock with no place to ship them.

It seems that even many conservatives thinks food comes from the grocery store.

Small time processors are saying the same thing. We buy from local butcher who buys from local farms and processors. With many of the big restaurant buyers drying up they don’t have the ability to shift to retail packaging. So the farms have excess animals. Forget it is Tyson who’s saying this. It is fact.
We need to reopen business. We can’t go on like this for 30’more days. Let us old folks shelter. Everybody else get back to work. Reopen the schools.

The infection rate in the plants is only a bit more than the general population, IMO, except they're prioritizing testing in the plants. The whole pop is heading toward herd immunity, we just don't know it yet. Oh and the case fatality rate is far less than advertised.

This is much ado about ... November. Propoganda.

So what is the real problem here?

Workers?

Are they being kept out because of forced government plant closures, quarantining at home or are they afraid to work?

In the first case, reopen them. They’re essential.

In the second case, ensure they are listed as essential workers.

In the last case, offer them more pay. I’d gladly pay for increased meat prices due to wage increases now than shortages later. If the price is right, people will go back to work even with a risk.

Unless this is a back door way for the plant owners to get more illegals let in...

RIDICULOUS. This is a SHORT TERM SHUTDOWN. Animals can live a month longer before they're slaughtered.

tyson must have gotten turned down on their bailout request.”

Maybe so, but this issue is very real. Tyson isn’t a company that’s easy to love, but they are very important to our economy here.
There are pigs ready to go to slaughter and no place to take them. And young pigs ready to occupy the buildings of the pigs that should be pork chops by now.
‘The pigs just can’t sit in storage, they grow every day and like an assembly line, need to move forward in the process.

Hog farmers are preparing to kill off pigs right now if these plants don’t re open.

The packing plants are cold, damp and are packed with non English speaking people. A perfect place for the virus to have spread.
It sucks as they have to close to clean up, and test workers and bring back a staff that is virus free.
I used to raise hogs myself, have been following this issue closely.

IF farmers can afford to feed them for that long.

Sounds like another case for a Federal bailout.
