Karen Pence says vice president didn't know about Mayo Clinic mask policy until he left
The Hill ^ | 04 30 2020 | Brett Samuels

Second lady Karen Pence said Thursday that Vice President Pence had been unaware of the Mayo Clinic's policy requiring all visitors to wear a face covering until after he left the facility on Tuesday.

"As our medical experts have told us, wearing a mask prevents you from spreading disease. And knowing he doesn’t have COVID-19, he didn’t wear one," she said on "Fox & Friends."

"It was actually after he left Mayo Clinic that he found out they had a policy of asking everyone to wear a mask," the second lady continued. "So someone who’s worked on this whole task force for over two months is not someone who would have done anything to offend anyone or hurt anyone or scare anyone."

The vice president's visit to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota was intended to highlight research being done on treatments for the coronavirus, specifically how the blood of recovering patients can be used. But the trip was largely overshadowed by his decision not to wear a face covering in defiance of the clinic's policy.

Pence was the only individual spotted without a mask during his visit as he participated in a tour and held a roundtable discussion with physicians, nurses and researchers. Everyone else seen on camera with Pence had masks on, including Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Stephen Hahn.

On Tuesday, the clinic tweeted, then deleted, a message that it informed Pence of its masking policy prior to his arrival in Rochester.

"Mayo shared the masking policy with the VP’s office," the clinic said in an emailed statement after deleting the tweet.

You really think it was the “model” that got him spooked?

My guess it was the 40 industrial furnaces in Wuhan, plus the sat images of truckloads of bodies lined up in front of them, that probably spooked him.

I think you give Fauci too much credit.

Trump was mumble mouthed about the whole thing from the start. I remember him saying, “Everyone who needs to be tested is being tested” in the first presser. If that was the information he was getting from Fauci, they both should be fired.

Trump has dug himself into such a hole with his ego, he better be praying that this re-opening is successful.

Pence is doing just fine. He's done an excellent job running corona control. And he's a good balance to the President and stands with him 110%.

Find a Dem to pick on.

Exactly....Their masks protected the President. We know the VP is tested every day. Can’t say the same for the population at the Clinic.

Put on a mask and your career in national politics is over.

Pence wore one while touring a GM plant this afternoon. Photos all over the interweb.

Clearly you are not a fan of Mr. Trump.
You’re fully entitled to your opinion.

Interesting that you choose to hang-out here though.

Mark this date in your calendar. Mike Pence will NOT be the GOP nominee in 2024. I always figured that was the case, but this pretty much seals the deal.

Karen Pence says vice president didn't know about Mayo Clinic mask policy until he left.

So...the fact that every single person he met in the hospital except him was wearing a mask wasn't a giveaway?

I wish he hadn’t ...

The press is already hyperventilating over it... and they shouldn’t because with their masks on they might faint from lack of airflow.

Ehh - it was an honest mistake and if it was such a health violation for the clinic why didn’t they point it out?

I think what really happened is that he had it on for most of the visit and took it off for the photo op because some bloody in the entourage pointed out it wouldn’t look good and then put it back on after.

That’s why mayo deleted the tweet.

You don’t need a mask if you are tested daily, and obviously they didn’t ask him to wear one, or he would have.

The question is whether someone specifically did NOT ask him to wear one, so they could do this to him.

This reminds me of the stupid fake outrage when he drove with his Secret Service detail to a place where nobody drives cars anymore (except of course that people DO drive cars there, like police and fire, so it was a non-story blown up by the media).

Governor Cuomo issued a policy requiring all people to wear face masks in public.

He announced this at a public press conference, where he was NOT WEARING A MASK.

Come to think of it, I can’t think of a single picture of a governor yet that has them in a face mask.

Although Our governor, ralph “blackface” Northam, did for a brief moment wear a mask when demonstrating how the mask works — and he used a black mask. Which was hilarious.

In general terms, I’m against dynasties, too. But name someone else with the stones to continue the type governance being done by D. J. Trump, Sr. and I’ll be interested. But name someone. Mike Pence? Surely you jest. A good man, but lacks the chops to withstand an onslaught like D.J.T. has withstood. He’d fold and revert to RINO politics before you could say quick. It’s going to be difficult.

Au Contraire, I am a dedicated supporter of the President and his policies.

I judge politicians by their actions, not their words. I am an old yankee, and thus I never liked his “brashness.” But I have come to appreciate his name calling and bashing of opponents.

I think his actions during the pandemic have been pretty much spot on in his execution.

What I tire of is his constant self promotion. I tire of his repetitive pats on his own back. Its a style thing. Its not a style I’ve ever felt comfortable with. But I have “come to terms with it,” (I am sure that will make HIM feel better. ha ha.)

But I like his pro-growth agenda. I like his trade dealings and negotiations (or not) with Iran and North Korea.

My biggest issues on this site are the low information, knee jerk, blind following of what he says as gospel. I find that kind of blind loyalty disturbing. If find an inability to understand a variance of one degree away from the party line to be friggin communism.

It seems that no one is open for discussion any more. One reply and it is right to insults and “calling” out.

Its a big tent. You might like loud, brazen, and belligerent. I like winning. I am sure you do as well. So, we agree on the important stuff.

On other sites—like Reddit—I am constantly called out as a Trump Fascist. So I guess it all depends on perspective.

It may end up being Trump 2: Trump harder!

I’d vote for him - but I wish there’d be more like minded people running for office. The Democrats seem to have their socialist wing firing things up for the youth vote but I’m not seeing as much fire on our side.

And how large are the fluid droplets?

Oh right, 1-100 micrometers.

Again, nowhere near large enough to be stopped by a cloth mask. Highest-quality surgical mask, maybe half of them. Cloth mask? Pfft; last thing I read was maybe 4% efficiency at BEST. As I said, thinking that a cloth mask will work is like trying to keep out a dust storm with a chain link fence. The most that a cloth mask does is give people a false sense of security even in an actual pandemic.

Have you read ANYTHING on this, or do you expect CNN to spoon feed you all information as if you were a little bird?

Thank you for the information and not given in an insulting manner.

If the information I’ve read is accurate, surgical masks have about a 47% efficiency rate. So if everyone in a high-saturation area wears them I can certainly see how it would arrest or at least slow the spread.

Cloth masks, on the other hand, make me feel like it’s worse than nothing, since air and droplets can still get through them and people feel overly-secure with an insecure mask on.

This would be a problem if the China Flu was more lethal than it actually seems to be.

Ehh - it was an honest mistake and if it was such a health violation for the clinic why didn’t they point it out?

Why should they have to? Is Pence's powers of observation that limited?

I think what really happened is that he had it on for most of the visit and took it off for the photo op because some bloody in the entourage pointed out it wouldn’t look good and then put it back on after.

Then why doesn't Pence say so? His first excuse was he didn't wear one because he wanted to look the Mayo staff in the eye, which makes even less sense than his wife's excuse. He didn't wear one because he didn't think of wearing one. Apparently he doesn't read the White House guidelines.

I’ve had N95s in my supply closet for years. Your analysis means nothing to me. I know what I am supposed to have to protect myself and family.

I gave a box to my mother in law’s nursing home.

I bought the last two boxes at CVS the first week of January.

So, I know what I am doing. I learned about this stuff 20 years.
