N.J. facing ‘fiscal disaster’ that’s just weeks away from coronavirus pandemic, Murphy says

New Jersey is facing a financial disaster due to loss in revenue and spike in expenses related to the coronavirus outbreak that could be just weeks away, Gov. Phil Murphy said Monday.

“Right now, it’s pouring,” Murphy said, shortly after announcing he was ordering all public and private schools closed for the rest of the academic year. “We are on the brink of having to make very tough and, quite frankly, very unpalatable decisions."

Murphy has previously warned of “historic” public worker layoffs without federal assistance.

Murphy rescinded an executive order Monday from last year tasking the state treasurer to achieve a $1.26 billion surplus and said he plans to veto “numerous” bills to appropriate money to certain causes and programs.

The governor called on Congress to provide financial relief to the Garden State.

“A fiscal disaster is not months away — these decisions will be on our doorstep in just a few weeks,” Murphy said. “Congress needs to act, and act now.”

At a meeting with President Trump last week, Murphy said the hit to New Jersey by the coronavirus could be $20 billion to $30 billion, and federal aid was needed to make up for the losses.

“We don’t see it as a bailout," Murphy said at the meeting. "We see this as a partnership doing the right thing in what is the worst health care crisis in the history of our nation. And I want to again thank the president for an extraordinary spirit of partnership across the whole spectrum of our needs.”

Trump didn’t say whether he would support Murphy’s request, though he did say, “You can’t have a better representative than this man.”

Phil needs to be told to Eff off. This is my wonderful governor, who has been one of the most totalitarian and restrictive of the bunch. NJ deserves nothing, but I’m afraid Trump will cave and Phil will get his bailout. This is what coronavirus is all about now, federal $$. Either way, the taxpayers are screwed.

Good. New Jersey fully deserves every bit of misery, ruin, and destruction that can be heaped upon them. You reap what you sow.

“The pandemic did it to us! Pay no attention to our tax and spend policies over the last 40 years!”

Every state isn’t in this situation, why is that if it’s due to the pandemic?

Hey guv,

Did you consider a go-fund-me drive?
...a Car Wash?
...A bake sale?

Or are you simply wanting Uncle Sugar to bail you out???

Not gonna happen.

Trump already pointed out NJ was deep in debt before the virus.

If anything he’ll throw a lifeline, not a bailout.

The NJ governor went right to police, firefighters, teachers being laid off... typical left wing bull$hit.

I’m a career CA state worker...plenty of non-essential buracracy to cut.. before essential services get the axe.

The NJ governor was talking about legacy programs, legacy debt...went right to inherited problems BS.

Democrats destroyed NJ...they need to make massive cuts period!

I thought that was NJ’s continual position because it is NJ.

I have a partial solution.

These liberal states who are resisting reopening their economies, should move to reopen. Then the sales tax and income tax revenue will start flowing back into the State Treasury.

Trenton deserves nothing. No public employees have been laid off or fired but the Deranged Woodchuck shut down all of the businesses that pay all of the taxes and they had to lay off or fire their staff In fact, any public school teacher that received a stipend for coaching baseball, softball, track, etc...are STILL getting the stipend even though school is out for the rest of the year. They are really suffering, let me tell you!

NJ has been financially screwed for a long time and Bucky is just the latest scam artist crybaby.

Trump will probably allow it if he has the misguided belief he can win NJ in November.
