Mutations that tend to result in less mortality, are genetically favored. Population genetics demand it.

Your scenario, if true, makes it sound like the virus is engineered.
My understanding is that the rate of exposure is the all-important factor determining whether a person will get sick or be asymptomatic.
A low exposure rate allows the body’s macrophages to suppress the virus while it begins to code for an antibody. This keeps the virus from replicating faster than the immune system can keep it in check.
A high exposure rate overwhelms the body’s macrophage response allowing the virus to replicate out of control in the body before anti bodies are deployed.
IMO the quarantine should only be applied to the elderly and people with compromised immune systems. They need to be kept in low exposure to give their immune systems more time to respond and develop an anti body.
