My relatives have seen witness accounts that dispute the ambulance time and that she didn’t wait for the ambulance - that she was gone when the authorities arrived.

If true, leaving the scene of an accident. That will get you in jail over here too.

"Plus her husband is a spook, not a diplomat. Not sure diplomatic immunity even applies."

Diplomatic immunity applies to any job or position Chief of Mission, the Ambassador, says is needed or critical to mission. This is determined well before any one is assigned to the position and is requested of the host nation as soon as the assigned person arrives at post to fill his role. It automatically is requested for and extends to all family members.

And it is critical for foreign missions this immunity exist. Suppose a rogue or bad element in a host country approaches the "spook" and says "tell us what we want know or police will find cocaine in your wife's gym locker." With diplomatic immunity there is little to no risk of foreign government manipulation as they know they have no leverage.

There very well may be instances it is abused but over all it is vital in having persons representing US in nations all over the world.

spent a summer over there

went through the driving course no problem

had a small stick shift rental

great times around that area

learned roundabouts are wonderful on rural/country roads, not nearly as good on larger and/or urban roads

The silly thing is that if she were to face trial, she’d stand a good chance of being cleared anyway. British juries are notoriously lenient on driving charges (’there but for the grace of God...’ etc). It’s also common for those accused of causing death by dangerous driving to plead guilty to the lesser offence of causing death by careless driving, which usually results just in a fine and a driving ban, not imprisonment. And British judges are notoriously happy to accept that plea bargain (’there but for the grace of God’ again). Happens all the time with car/bicycle collisions.
