China Slashes Australian Beef, Barley Imports After Warning Against Coronavirus Probe
Breitbart - Politics ^ | 5-12-2020 | Simon Kent

China slapped an import ban on four Australian abattoirs Tuesday in an escalation of Beijing’s warning of a consumer boycott in retaliation for Canberra’s push for an independent coronavirus probe.

The beef ban comes just days after China flagged plans to slap an 80 percent tariff on Australian barley, bringing the trade to its knees.

Analysts said the move raised concerns of a possible standoff between Australia and its most important trading partner that could spill over into other crucial sectors as the world struggles to navigate the disease-induced economic crisis.

The Financial Times reports China is Australia’s largest trade partner, with two-way trade worth $153bn in the year to the end of June 2019.

However, bilateral relations have sunk following Canberra’s passage of tough foreign interference laws in 2018, which were aimed mainly at Beijing, and its more recent calls both for a coronavirus probe and an end to China’s live animal wet markets. Australian Trade Minister Simon Birmingham tried to allay fears of a trade war overnight, saying shipments of meat from the abattoirs had been suspended over “minor technical” breaches.

(snip)

But the calls have drawn retaliatory threats from Beijing, with ambassador Cheng Jingye calling them “dangerous.” .... It now appears China is ready to make good on the threat because Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison has shown no intention of backing down.

Australia however is not alone in its fight against China.

ChiCom is in no position to escalate trade wars with the world. But they are backed into a corner.

The usual bluster and threat probably will not work this time. The rest of the world should stand together on this.

Funny for ChiComm ambassador to Australia Cheng Jingye to say “It is up to the people to decide.”

CCP doesn’t let their own people to decide (”social network credit”), clamped down on leaders in Hong Kong demonstration, and fake accounts in China calling for invasion of Taiwan, etc. etc.

F**k Chine, we’ll take it. We’re about to get into a pretty serious meat shortage...

The CCP is nothing but an international organized crime ring. They need to be made a pariah.

After their act of war the Chinese should be bombed back to the stone age.

Great timing, lots of processed Aussie beef available just when the US may have a shortage.

We could also use more Aussie lamb.

I had Aussie steak 2 weeks ago for the 1st time. It was pretty good. There was a definite flavor difference being grass fed. The US steak cuts as well as chicken tenderloins I usually get were out of stock.

I will step up and take those extra rack of lamb off their hand if you sell them to me for $4.95/lb. I’m just trying to do my part.

Get our supply chains back to normal. Stop selling plant-based artificial meat crap. And import as much beef as possible from Australia without affecting our ranchers. Screw China. Let them eat bat. I would love to afford to eat beef more often. I’m getting sick of chicken.

Everyone needs to pull back from China. China’s CCP will rule the world if countries don’t disengage with China. China need only control one part of the capitalism supply chain. They offer their markets in a limited way. They buy decision makers and academics. And they use the power of a country to fight companies and colleges. If we simply say no to China. Or we say yes with very large tariffs then free market will overcome China. But if we let the CCP buy the best parts of the world on the promise to their markets, the world will become communist. And it will be controlled by the CCP.

We sell them meat, ag product and raw materials. In turn they ship us finished durable high value added goods. We fought a revolutionary war with GB to stop being used like this.

Good point. Washington was irritated with having to order expensive fine items from Britain and being sent shoddy stuff because the sellers knew colonials would just have to suck it up.

Being on the wrong end of Chinese mercantilism is not becoming a world “super” power.
