Article states....”Pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong have directly appealed to Washington for intervention”......

So just exactly what do they want us to do? It’s definatly an “Internal Chinese Issue” which they have to determine.

I understand the differences between Hong Kong and the Communist Leadership of China.....but it is their battle to settle..again.

“Hong Kong is part of China” is the leftist slogan.

That may be. It's also a fact, Hong Kong is part of China, though China has agreed not to impose socialize/Communism until 1947. I doubt there's anything we can do. The Brits could bring the issue before the UN I suppose since the treaty is registered there. Or go to the international courts. We're largely out of it. Taiwan too, though we have some options there.

The move is the boldest yet from Beijing to undercut Hong Kong’s autonomy and bring the global financial hub under its full control, as it works to rewrite the rules that have allowed the territory to enjoy a level of autonomy for the past 23 years.

Once they do, President Trump should issue an EO kicking every Chinese National Company off the US Stock Exchange.

Take NO PRISONERS, Mr. President.

Hong Kong is 6 times the size of Washington, DC. Hong Kong has a population of more than 7.5 million people (in 2019). Official languages are Chinese (Cantonese) and English..... The city is regarded as a cosmopolitan center where ‘East meets West’ (like Chinese food and Disney Land), it has become ‘one of the world’s major financial and manufacturing centers’.

Hong Kong’s major areas are the Kowloon Peninsula, which is connected with the mainland, the outlying mountainous Lantau Island, the smaller Lamma island, densely populated Hong Kong Island, plus more than 200 smaller islands.... The territory is ‘a major port city with an outstanding deepwater harbor’......

You know, in all the years we've been on here, I think I can count on one hand minus a few fingers the number of times we've disagreed.

This isn't one of those times. I like your thinking here. I'll add the minute China does a full fledged take-over of HK that President Trump should IMMEDIATELY issue an EO removing every China owned/controlled company from the US Stock Exchange.

Cut off the capitalist funding that enables the Communist Regime at their knees.

Background:
Hong Kong is situated to the south of the Chinese province of Guangdong (formerly known as Canton). The former British Dependent Territory of Hong Kong includes Victoria (commonly known as Hong Kong Island), the Kowloon Peninsula, which forms together with Lantau Island, the “New Territories,” and 235 outlying islands.

Occupied by the UK in 1841, Hong Kong was formally ceded by China the following year; various adjacent lands were added later in the 19th century.

Under an agreement signed by China and the UK on 19 December 1984, Hong Kong became the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 1 July 1997.

In this agreement, China has promised that, under its “one country, two systems” formula, the Chinese socialist economic system will not be imposed on Hong Kong. Hong Kong will enjoy a high degree of autonomy in all matters, except foreign and defense affairs, for the next 50 years (at least until 2047).

HSBC Holdings plc is a British multinational investment bank and financial services holding company. It was the 7th largest bank in the world by 2018, and the largest in Europe, with total assets of US$2.558 trillion (as of December 2018).

You are correct, sir.

I agree, it’s a wonderful place, and largely wonderful people. And in addition to being a major financial and manufacturing center, it’s a first class shopping destination. But in the long run there’s not much we can do to help them maintain a capitalist system. Bluster, threaten, sure. But it’s a matter of time.

Give it up with your propaganda and fake conservatism.

I know, America's future is global manifest destiny, we will control the world. Anything short of that is "fake conservatism". I'm curious, Hong Kong would be a valuable asset, and I'm not so sure at this point many would oppose US hegemony. How do you plan on accomplishing that? It is part of China, leaving out the world since we're going to own it all anyway, the US recognizes it as well. I'd suggest if we want to flex our muscles in the region, Taiwan would be a better place.

It’s a “fact” so long as you let it be a fact. All a matter of greater will; it’s Red China’s will that Hong Kong be part of their empire.

Red China still operates according to the principles in Sun Tzu’s treatise “The Art Of War”, one principle stating: “(S)upreme excellence consists of breaking the enemy’s resistance (will) without fighting”. Their will is not broken. This tactic is still open to us, if we embrace it; I’ve seen Trump embrace it.

BTW, the UN is a communistic organization; its charter, written by Alger Hiss, is a clone of the 1936 USSR constitution. Guess whose side they would take, just as they took the side of the USSR in the past? Hence the calls by many on FR to defund the whole thing, which Trump is doing albeit piecemeal.

Hong Kong isn’t the place. As far as we’re concerned they’re part of China, with a degree of political and economic independence for a couple more decades. Which pretty much leaves them at China’s will. They demonstrate in the streets on occasion, but to my knowledge there’s no viable independence movement. We can complain, but the best we can do is delay the inevitable for a few years. Unless, as some suggest, this is the time and place to go to war, economic or otherwise, with little to be gained for the US.
