Mayor Bill de Blasio insists city businesses forced to close because of the coronavirus outbreak are doing just fine and will be able to stay shuttered for months to come despite a new report that found the Big Apples private sector has shed one in four jobs.
Ive talked to lots and lots of business leaders, especially the smallest businesses. Theyre very worried about their futures understandably, but they also are hanging on and they know it can be a matter of months until theyll be back in action, de Blasio said.
A caller from Brooklyn urged Hizzoner to take a more surgical approach to the citys COVID-19 response. Were on the precipice of destroying the whole city basically, Cassius said.
I couldnt disagree more with that core analysis, de Blasio responded.
Rushing back is consistently proven to have the boomerang effect and make things worse and cause bigger shutdowns, de Blasio said.
City Councilman Mark Gjonaj blasted the mayors remarks.
Out of all the things that have come out of his mouth, this is the most outrageous, said the Bronx Democrat, who chairs the councils small business committee.
Hes going to leave City Hall in the worse condition that this city has experienced since World War II and the Great Depression, he said.
That would also explain why he only allocated $49 million in loans and grants, which is a fraction of a fraction of what these small businesses actually need, Gjonaj said.
The National Restaurant Association predicted that 11 percent of New Yorks 25,000 restaurants will permanently close by the end of May. Iconic Big Apple eateries like Coogans Irish pub in Washington Heights and egg cream spot Gem Spa in the East Village have already shut their doors for good.

Atlantic City hotels are taking reservations in 2 weeks.
I would imagine the casinos would be open too :)
As for NYC, whatever.
I’m saving a lot of money and will be in a good position to move if the city sinks for good.
In the meantime, I go driving late at night and I don’t see one car on the road, not even a cop car.
“Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?”
What an ignorant ass. I hope he gets the chicom flu and die a horrible death
Well in small town USA there have been some businesses that will not recover.
Just get outta there, dp
De Blasio has NEVER worked in private industry, NEVER made a payroll, and NEVER made a profit.
He is totally clueless.
This stupid M’fer.
“Mayor Bill de Blasio insists city businesses forced to close because of the coronavirus outbreak are doing just fine and will be able to stay shuttered for months to come”
He is either a liar or an F ing idiot but I suspect both.
I didn’t think it was possible, but I believe that deBlahBlahBlah is more clueless than Quid Pro Joe. And that’s a pretty low bar to set!
They voted for the clueless communist. Elections have consequences. Be interesting to see what happens in the next elections.
doing just fine and will be able to stay shuttered for months to come
As if this clueless Marxist would have any comprehension. Months, the a-hole says
I get the impression of Monty Python's Dead Parrot sketch.
Mr. Praline: "VOOM"?!? Mate, this business wouldn't "voom" if you put four million volts through it! It's bleedin' demised!
Owner: No no! It's pining!
Mr. Praline: It's not pinin'! It's passed on! This business is no more! It has ceased to be! It's expired and gone to meet its maker! It's a stiff! Bereft of life, it rests in peace! If you hadn't nailed it to the perch it'd be pushing up the daisies! Its metabolic processes are now 'istory! It's off the twig! It's kicked the bucket, It's shuffled off its mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible!! THIS IS AN EX-BUSINESS!!
Has Joe Biden ever worked in the private sector?
Has Joe Biden ever had to meet a payroll?
DeBlasio is term limited, but Im sure the idiots in NYC will elect another Democrat.
.... I go driving late at night and I dont see one car on the road, not even a cop car....

Ya know what??
The Sandy storm was MUCH MORE spooky.
I was driving a cab overnight for a few extra bucks and started driving only 2 nights later.
It looked like a war torn, deserted town, some parts.

God that shook me to the core. Don[’t know why
