The video of a 20-year-old brutally beating an elderly patient at a Detroit nursing home has gotten national attention - and even the President has weighed in. Now police are investigating a possible second incident caught on camera while the young man's father says there's more to the story.
The 20-year-old, who FOX 2 is not identifying as he has not yet been charged with a crime, was on video beating an elderly patient at Westwood Nursing Center earlier this week. The violent video is incredibly difficult to watch for most - including the father of the younger man, who says he's praying for the elderly victim.
"That hurts to see that," he said. "What he did is wrong and (I offer) my apologies to the victim's family."
The father, who asked not to be identified, said his son has had several health issues growing home, has autism, and called from a group home in Chelsea last week to say he wasn't sleeping, was feeling anxious, and hearing voices.
"I just don't want people to think that he's this vicious individual. He's got mental issues," his father said.
He said his son called 911 and was taken to a mental health facility in Ann Arbor. Last Wednesday, he was diagnosed with COVID-19 and said he was supposed to be taken to another facility to be quarantined. "It should've never happened because he should've never been put in that environment."
His father also says there is a pending case in Washtenaw County where his son is accused of assaulting a staff member at another group home. The young man's father says he's had serious behavioral problems for a long time and should have been closely monitored at Westwood.
"Had I known he was there I would've never have consented to it," he said.
On the 20-year-old's YouTube channel, you can see dozens of boxing videos and so-called pranks. The young man is known to attend NorWayne Boxing Gym but the folks there say he was never a member or a part of the gyms youth program. They issued a statement on their website:
"We share everyone's sadness over this situation. What this highlights is the importance of helping at-risk kids in our community at an early age."
Meanwhile an attorney for Westwood Nursing Center tells FOX 2 they were unaware of the attack until they saw the video, they're investigating the situation and cooperating with police. They added the young man was not a long-term resident.
Detroit police say the man is in custody and awaiting charges. Police are now investigating whether the same man is involved in another beating of an elderly woman.
There are some people behind the scenes making policies and decisions who have a lot to answer for.
It has been widely reported that Michigan’s governor issued an edict similar to NY’s, NJ, and Pa. that Nursing Homes and Long-Term Care facilities must accept Wuhan Virus patients to relieve the burden on hospitals.
This idiocy has only happened in certain Blue states. Florida has been so successful in limiting death because it Protected their very large Elderly population.
“The video of a 20-year-old brutally beating an elderly patient at a Detroit nursing home has gotten national attention” That’s a lie. It has been ignored by most of the media bent on lynching the guys in Brunswick, GA. This hate crime does not fit their agenda and will get little to no coverage outside Detriot.
His father doesnt want people to think hes vicious. Well, pops - your son is vicious. Mental health issues are a different thing. Many people have mental issues and are not vicious.
“I just don’t want people to think that he’s this vicious individual.” How would anyone get that idea?????
It’s almost pre-meditated murder on the part of the governors.
Aw, he's such a good boy. He never should've been put in that environment. It's someone else's fault.
At what point does a mental illness just become having a bad personality?
The hiring practices of Nursing Homes has been an issue for decades. It as an issue that many states have never addressed. This is just the most recent beating in those facilities to make the news. It has been going on for a great many years.
Mental problems? Everyone who does what he did has mental problems.
The title makes no sense. Who beat whom?
That’s my boy!
The 20-year old wasn't an employee. He was a patient.
Apparently housing younger homeless people, drug addicts, alcoholics, and various mental cases in nursing homes alongside elderly residents is a thing now.
The young male perpetrator of the attack was known to have mental illness and behavioral problems,......Well, what do you we usually do with rabid animals?
He bet more than one patient, there is another video where it looks like he is beating a woman lying in a bed. This is not for the faint hearted, beware before you watch it.
And he was a damn Covid patient sent to a nursing home with elderly people. He’s obviously a very dangerous person and should be locked in a mental facility for the rest of his life.
There is no way in hell those people at that nursing home didn’t know those people had been beaten. No way in hell. There needs to be a lot of people sent to jail over this, especially the person who ordered this guy be sent to this nursing home.
This nation has become a hell on earth and I see no hope for it.
“The 20-year-old, who FOX 2 is not identifying as he has not yet been charged with a crime, “
Translation... he is in a mental health facility. No charges coming.
No one said much about the maturity level or IQ of this young gentleman. It would be curious to know if this were a high school drop-out (say from the 9th grade). Lets be honest, a lot of these retirement home operations do marginal background checks on their employees.
If I respond how I FEEEEEEL, I wil be permanently banned.
This POS needs a lesson in manners,
as does his “daddy”
I despise this kind of “person”.
They deserve rather innovative and interesting forms of punishment. /things thought of by...oh say the Spanish nquisition
The Nursing Center was unaware of the incident until they saw the video. Days after the assaults. UNBELIEVABLE!!!
No other staff questioned those bloody sheets in at least two different rooms?
No other staff questioned why several patients required First Aid all of a sudden, when neither patient had a history of
SIB behavior? SIB = Self Injurious Behavior.
No other staff questioned all the bruises, or the agitation of these people?
Somebody had to come around to give them medications.
They ‘saw nothing’ too? Either lazy or complicit.
Close that Shit Storm of a facility down now!!!
He was getting his life together.
Planning on going to barber school but then COVID-19 came along and he saw there was no future as a "non-essential".
No /s tag because this is the psychological cost of the "cure"
