In the past, U.S. corporations have largely remained silent as protests erupted over killings of African-Americans by police officers. That changed with the May 25 death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, which has set off a flurry of corporate statements of solidarity with the black community along with pledges of more than $1.7 billion to advance racial justice and equity.
The unprecedented outpouring of support, however, has stirred up criticism along with praise. Many social justice advocates, corporate diversity experts and investors say companies also need to focus on equity in their own ranks, especially by hiring and promoting minority workers.
The tensions show the difficulty executives face in aligning their firms with popular social causes at a time of soaring wealth and inequality and growing pressure from some investors to show leadership on societal problems. Activists, along with some business leaders, also see an opportunity amid global protests to push reform on social justice issues well beyond police brutality.
The rush of corporate concern belies the reality of workforce inequity, said Natasha Lamb, managing partner of Arjuna Capital. Arjuna is a Boston-based investment adviser and frequent filer of shareholder resolutions pressing companies - with mixed success - to disclose more data on pay equity.
If you take an honest look at corporate America, outside their glossy diversity reports, structural bias for women and people of color remains as entrenched as ever, she said.
Leaders of major companies including Comcast Corp (CMCSA.O), Nike Inc (NKE.N) and Warner Music Group Corp WMG.O have announced major gifts to advance racial justice amid the protests over Floyds death. Bank of America pledged $1 billion over four years to address economic and racial inequality. At least a dozen other big companies announced gifts between $1 million and $100 million for similar efforts.

Libs are feeling it right now. We have one at the office who is pushing the envelope.
As a former defense worker I can tell you what diversity means to the government and, therefore, to the contractor. It means hiring “highly compensated” blacks. I was told that having a Vietnamese, several Indians, a few Hispanics and a Russian did not count as diversity. Only blacks counted. The woman who came and judged whether we got our diversity quota bonus was a very unpleasant black woman.
So, what did we end up with? Some highly compensated decorative desk lumps. They did no work. I managed to get mine off the government charge number I managed by threatening to call the government fraud line as he was only in the plant about thirty hours per week but charged OT on my numbers. They made him the diversity chairman.
It all came to a head at one of our quarterly senior management meetings at our home office. After listening to an impassioned presentation from the senior VP of human resources on the company's commitment to "diversity," I turned to the guy sitting next to me -- who happened to be my boss -- and said loudly:
"We sure are committed to diversity here. Look around this room ... we have Protestants, Catholics AND Jews among the senior management of this company!"
I don’t get what the problem is.
Everyone who feels a job depends on it should just self-identify as black.
OH BOY!! You must have had some serious looks with that one.:)
The head extortionist Al Sharpton is rubbing his greedy hands. He is a living testament to a black man who uses extortion and gets away with it, evades taxes and gets away with it and is given a high paying job on a national network as a reward, destroyed countless lives in fabricated racial events to fill his pockets. This is what you are proud of black America? Every American should be reading over the list of companies supporting BLM. Highlight the ones you use and make sure you remove them from your life, period! We can do something about it.
DO NOT PATRONIZE THESE COMPANIES
Enough with this cliche. You can apply this term to almost any point in history.
If investors want social justice then they can compensate all of the other investors who invested for a return on their money, run in a responsible manner, not a social justice manner. This is one of the issues the left have, they take or confiscate others money and do what they want with it instead of using their own bank account.
I got into a couple of heated discussions online with very prominent successful business people who I used to respect because I was told I had white privilege and was part of the white supremacist problem. They posted all of the things they were going to do in their businesses to fight racial injustice. I told them that I already did all of those things since the age of 5 and wanted to 1) Why it took them so long, and 2) when were they going to apologize to me for their racism accusation. I am sure you can summarize some of their reactions:)
Surely this is satire......right?
Hundreds of millions of dollars going straight to the democrats and into the pockets of the very people causing this strife and division.
soaring wealth and inequality...
Funny. Just as we reached historically low unemployment numbers along with the best employment numbers *ever* for minorities, the MSM ginned up the COVID-19 “crisis” projecting millions dead in the US based on a since-learned faulty model. As a result, they derailed and shut down the economy. One might suspect ulterior motives.
LOL. Only from the HR people. I’m sure everyone else in the room was embarrassed by the truth of it.
Corporations see this diversity thing as a cost of doing business. Management is smarter than the rest of us. They know how to keep their mouths shut. They want promotions to get ahead, meaning retirement. Go with the flow as they’re aware they can’t do anything. just look at how that coward Godell is reacting.
...should be shunned and ignored where possible.
More so now, I suspect...technology advances are making a lot of people rich.
Great, I say...but compared to what? That gal who posted the video b!tching about AYRABS preventing their stores from being looted?
It's not just that she's worthless and should be paid nothing...she should be charged rent for occupying space.
Of course there's inequality.
That is part of the de facto reparations of the past half century; basically no-show jobs, a “reparations tax” on companies. The public sector is filled with them, and they are filling the private sector with threats of lawsuits.
The silver lining in my job is that I can “work like a girl”, doing the 40 hours and no more, because the girls don’t even work that much; nobody can say a word to me about it. It is a general lowering of the bar, and a huge albatross around the neck of companies.
