Dr. Anthony Fauci says he would “settle” for a COVID-19 vaccine that’s 70% to 75% effective, but that this incomplete protection, coupled with the fact that many Americans say they won’t get a coronavirus vaccine, makes it “unlikely” that the US will achieve sufficient levels of immunity to quell the outbreak.
With government support, three coronavirus vaccines are expected to be studied in large-scale clinical trials in the next three months.
“The best we’ve ever done is measles, which is 97 to 98 percent effective,” said Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “That would be wonderful if we get there. I don’t think we will. I would settle for [a] 70, 75% effective vaccine.”
A CNN poll last month found one-third of Americans said they would not try to get vaccinated against COVID, even if the vaccine is widely available and low cost.
In an interview Friday, CNN asked Fauci whether a vaccine with 70% to 75% efficacy taken by only two-thirds of the population would provide herd immunity to the coronavirus.
“No — unlikely,” he answered.

If the virus propagates widely enough, we will have herd immunity without a vaccine anyway, no?
If it mutates, then it can spread more and herd immunity wont matter as much, but then again, the vaccine will not be effective anyway! This is just the same as how the flu vaccine cannot keep up with the flu strains that spread seasonally.

Whether or not there is a vaccine this year or next year or never, I feel 100% confident there will NEVER be another national lockdown in this country and probably in any other developed one.

No way will I take that vaccine. No way. Or any other vaccine for flu-like stuff. Did you know 40% of people that take the flu shot get the freakin’ flu? I can’t even remember when I last had the flu. Ten years ago? Can’t remember.
No, that is not opposite. Herd immunity is when a virus gets into a population but cannot spread because too many people have immunity either from previous exposure, exposure to a similar virus, or vaccination.

Unless you stay indoors indefinitely and slather everything and everyone that enters your house with Lysol, you will eventually be exposed to the current coronavirus. I’ll take my exposure in the form of a vaccine which has been tested for months - safer than simply taking on the virus from some infected cashier at Costco.
