My college roommate was 4-year NROTC scholarship (like me) but went SeaBees, Construction Battalion or CEC. He ran the Marine’s Air Base maintenance and construction at their 29 Palms and South Carolina bases.
Italian father, Polish mother, Ocean Engineering major at Texas A&M, his Final Project was “Beach Erosion” (Sand and Wave Interaction Analysis). Was really disappointed when I told him that the Navy already had invented salt water. 8<)

When I returned to U.S. in June 1953, it was still mostly being built... As I remember it, most guys were talking about it as though it was a large brig... {:-)
Even in 1973 there wasn’t much there, on base or in ‘town’.......one traffic light................
