> Rate of flow in area per unit of time? Doesn’t make sense.

Journalists who majored in Gender Studies don't have time for details like proper units of measure.

Units of measure are white supremacist, racist, sexist, capitalist, imperialist concepts!!

Don'tcha know....

I was thinking it might be a simple translation error, but the numbers for square feet versus square meters are internally consistent. Scientific illiteracy of journalists seems like the best explanation.

Caww,

A picture is worth a thousand words of Chinese newsprint.

Thank you.

My high school physics teacher never knew that, I guess. The correct units were worth half the score for each homework or exam problem.

They must mean cubic meters, not square meters. Probably a translator error.

> Watch this YouTube video I ran across recently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfmWmSdNmMc Video has a weird partial title that doesn’t do it justice, and the audio seems to be voice to text computer generated from software Chine to English translation. Wild footage in the video!

Wow, I should say so! That's extremely frightening. Nightmare material -- except that it's real.

Yep. As it happens I majored in Physics (undergrad), and the first thing -- the very first thing -- we did when attacking a problem, was to work out the units, from start to finish. As you say about the score, getting the units to come out right was half the work, and made the rest relatively straightforward, even if initially the problem sounded impossible.

Except that their figures are consistent for area. 55 million square meters *is* nearly 600 million square feet.

After what the Chinese have brought upon the world they deserve to have the Three Gorges Dam fail.
To hell with them.

The mud slides, sounds etc have been ongoing for decades.....The problem is China’s intnse lust for energy and vast array of dam building, on unstable ground, that’s been and will remain the problem for all the issues on the Yangtze River. They were warned time again about all these dams, how they’ve been built etc. to no avail because China has an agenda to control it’s southern countries water flow as political leverage.

We love the Yangtse, Yangtse Kiang,
Flowing from Yushu,
Down to Ching Kiang.
Passing through Chung King
Wuhan and Hoo Kow,
Three thousand miles,
But it gets there somehow,
Oh! Szechuan’s the province
And Shanghai is the port
And Yangtse is the river
That we all support!

China’s been releasing water from it’s dams since may and likely prior.....much of this flooding is from those releases, added with it the rains.

Sadly many told China these type of disasters would occur because of all their dams changing the entire land along the YantZe river. Plus using those dams during drought and monsoon seasons means they flexuate......like an iron bar that would weaken if you bend it back and forth.

When there is a lot more water coming in than can be released over a long period of time, there are going to be serious flooding problems. If upstream dams can’t hold back the water, there is a good chance there will be a catastrophic failure of the Three Gorges Dam.
