In a previous life, I rented out my multi-family house in Connecticut. My main tenant being my step mother, and all of my tenants were “D’s” with a capital “L”. They voted for every single tax increase, and treated me like asking for rent was a crime of some sort. I dumped that house. I hope a corporation is now managing it. Compassion is the fastest way to the poorhouse, at least as I lived it.
These days, things are different. Many of the sob stories are true. People who’d rather work have been home for months. It’s time for the banks to defer, or for all of us to get back to living. Can’t live without one or the other.
Landlords are scared too. The good news for the tenant, is that when the bank takes over the property there is usually a delay and the tenant gets 2 to 6 months free rent. The bad news is that many landlords are older and have their life savings in the property and are then left destitute. No matter they are older and are going to die sooner anyway. /s
Yes self employed get social security.
I am an independent contractor. Self employed.
Every year I file my taxes. Part of my taxes are a schedule c and a schedule SE. Youll see on these forms that we pay 15 percent social security tax.
When you hit 63 I believe at this point you can file for social security. The longer you wait, up until age 70, the higher your monthly payments will be.
So you need to decide when its best for you to file.
I understand you can file online.
Most corporate landlords (like most of the the ones in Denver) were the first to slap eviction notices on apartment complex doors - and the first to use aggressive debt collectors threatening wage, other garnishments, and nationwide rental bans.
The same corporate greedy property management companies that have high-powered eviction lawyers on speed dial. When I needed to fight my eviction in pre-coronavirus times, most lawyers wanted $3000 to $5000 on retainer.
I won without a lawyer as I pointed out to the judge that utilities were not specifically listed in the lease agreement and were a separate accounting code (must be paid separately), and the rental company did not send out paper bills, only electronic bills, which I never received as they gmail sent the notices directly to spam.
Property management company was charging $75 late fees per day, starting on the 2nd, including holiday weekends when banks would not process ACH payments, for things like complex paid utilities which meant heat. $80 per month. Including the summer months. Not controllable by the tenant, and not billed until the 1st of the month. Due on the 1st as well. Cant log in the payment site? (Complex did not take cash, checks, money orders, cashiers checks - only online, with a $10 to $50 payment processing fee added). You pay. Holiday weekend, first banking day on the 4th? You instantly owe $300 late fees.
Although I won had eviction case and the rental management company lawyer was admonished by the Judge for these late fees, I still owe almost $6100 in late fees and debt collection costs over a $53 utilities bill.
Waiting until September to file bankruptcy to wipe that and all excess bills off my record. So much for my formerly decent 760 to 780 FICO score. Luckily all my Personal and Real property is outside the US and not subject to US bankruptcy laws (thank you Philippines real estate ownership laws)
Wow that is an incredible scam!
LOL
Places on the MS Gulf Coast have their “Help Wanted” signs out - folks got too cozy with that $600/week gift..
Everything you describe is an Un-Constitutional Taking by the State and everyone that has been victimized by the State’s TAKING OF THEIR PROPERTY, deserves to be Compensated, and the Compensation should be paid by a Special Assessment on the Incomes, Tips, Wages and ASSETS of ALL PUBLIC EMPLOYEE’s
I agree with you—there is more suffering out there than Freepers seem to realize. I think a lot of Freepers are retired? I can’t tell.
Service industries and small businesses—time to pivot away from them a bit.
Honestly and this might be an unpopular idea but it’s time to pivot to the covid related jobs that ARE hiring. Delivery. Amazon drivers. There are federal jobs hiring (FEMA, SBA). Contact tracers. Health care.
My new grad 21 year old son just got two job offers—100% remote and pay well. Auditing and accounting. He did have to put in hundreds of applications and did a nationwide search.
Now that so many jobs are remote nationwide searches make sense.
Many thanks for the info.
What do folks do for health insurance, both during self-employment, and at 63?
I had my hair done a little over a week ago. They were going to shut down my hairdresser again. Her husband hasn’t worked since March. She said they would probably lose their house. I got on a plane the next day from LAX to XNA....1/4 full....maybe. Same on the way back Wednesday. Have a fiend who is a bartender at a casino in Nevada. He’s in deep trouble. They called them back to work but didn’t reopen any of the bars except to cocktail waitresses. Went from making $300-500 per night to $45. My business has been shut down since March.
I say the governments caused all this they should pay for it. Pretty simple to me.
Maybe we would need to do as Joseph did when he was Pharoah’s administrator in Egypt; he set up a national stockpile of food during the 7 good years, because there were 7 bad years coming.
Similarly, we too would need to have national and state stockpiles for actual money (gold, silver), plus food, water, fuel, and medicine.
In re health insurance:
If self employed, in California anyway, you can get Covered California which is our version of obamacare. I make a decent part time income and pay ... $1 a month premium. High deductible. If you are quite poor you also qualify for Medicaid.
Its something I oppose and I vote against all socialized medicine. However our government has largely destroyed a competitive health care market so I just get along as best I can. I pay cash to see the providers I want but I am in good health. Ill use this insurance only if Im in a bad accident or get seriously ill.
Alternatives to socialized medicine in the whole US also include medical shares ministries like psalm 23 and Samaritan - Ive known people with these for years and all reviews are very positive. Maybe 2-300 a month? If you qualify.
Once you get social security, you get Medicare. You have no choice. They take the premium out of your benefit before they send you your benefit. Personally Id just use this for major medical and pay cash for basic health care. Its really not that expensive if you are a cash paying patient and you get much better service and attention.
Hope that helps.
Instead of paying the banks for their loss+cost, just pay the delinquent payments for the consumer we claim to be protecting.
$1 a month for the insurance?
How much is the deductible?
Are they protecting Homeowners who can’t pay their Property Taxes too?
