I’ve seen dementia first hand. Joe’s not faking it.
Well, although I question the extent of Biden dementia, I can testify first hand and second hand of the phenomena.
As I type I just remembered the name of the thai grilled meat on a stick. It’s sate. I have used the word for ever but yesterday I couldn’t make it come to my mind in my response to my wife’s query about what I wanted to eat next week. The inability to come up with a specific word on demand just happens, not always but it happens.
As a matter of speech, it affects my wife. She pauses and then resumes her message.
The term cognitive ability has been introduced. I don’t consider the loss of words to be loss of cognitive ability. We both still work. I still analyze facts presented and write long complex and sometimes quite technical reports. My wife in her retirement has become an archivist of records and photos. She is involved with very large data bases and large e mail correspondence.
Neither of our minds is cognitively impaired.
When you are old and active, your memory is quite extensive and the paths to old stuff get shunted for current stuff. The paths are there but timing is no longer instantaneous.
Having said all that, I do not believe Biden should be required as President to try to be up to speed in a meeting or on the phone with say the G 7 leaders od Xi or Putin. They would eat his lunch.
