I will second your question/comment. The main reason being that there will be a fair amount of R&D put up to make electronic components that are rad hard. Off the shelf terrestrial components wont be reliable or have sufficient life. That development and capability is something we should promote in house, not outsourced.

Despite technology advancements...it will still take 3 seconds plus instrument processing delays to get communication 1-way...If you think the video/audio lag in Zoom is tough to deal with...imagine a zoom meeting between Earth and Moon!

Theres not a US company that could do this?No, Motorola used to make a line of cell phones (Moto X) in the US, but I think they moved that production overseas a few years ago. A quarter of a century of Bush/Obama/Clinton had a cost to the country.
