Probably but put the warhead on a medium range ICBM, load it on a barge down below so it can’t be seen, get in range say 500 miles from NYC, launch it and see what happens....

It’s vitally important to develop anti-missile technology and continue to make the technology better......

But like anything, it could probably be defeated with a little creativity...

There is some truth to this. Someone once said, the easiest explanation is usually the correct one. I suspect that’s the case here, in terms of the lower the tech, the easier to pull off.

The FACT is that many countries have been working on this type of a program for decades and I’m damn glad it was the USA who made it work first and best.

Some people are stupid enough to think second place will get you a prize in a nuclear conflict. Yes they really do think that way.

I know and understand MAD, I also know that this new system was going to be designed and deployed by someone. We need to make damn sure we are always first in this nuclear competition.

I believe (after spending 24 years of service during the cold war) that the next nuclear strike will be launched by either Iran or North Korea targeting Saudi, Israel, South Korea, or/or Japan.

To stop the war they intend to start, we need exactly this system so we can kill their weapons before they strike their intended target.

If Iran or North Korea successfully launched a nuclear strike against any other nation we would be forced to instantly kill their country with our nuclear weapons. Yes we have the ability to kill both North Korea and Iran.

Our only consideration with the use of our larger nuclear munitions would be impacting those nations in locations that would minimize fallout into surrounding nations.

In Korea we would reaffirm our war footing (we are still technically at war with North Korea) Take out all of their large cities and military bases and annihilate everything for a good bit north of the DMZ with smaller tactical nuclear weapons. That would be day one.

In Iran, with the help of Israel, we would just make it a glowing glass parking lot. The large nuclear strike from Israel would arrive in Iran in minutes after their launch. A second nuclear assault, 10 times larger with much wider and more accurate targeting, would arrive less than an hour later. That would end the one day war of Iran.

If you have no personal or primary knowledge of the middle east, Israel is a tiny country and the detonation of two medium sized nuclear weapon would wipe out all of their cities and almost all of their nation.

Israel knows she is the primary target of Iran.

Israel has the ability to spot all incoming strikes, Israel is a nuclear armed nation, and before the first nuclear detonation happens in Israel their nuclear retaliation would be in the air and unstoppable.

The folks who published this article are full of BS and are trying very hard to indicate that our nation should be second best in the ongoing nuclear weapons/anti nuclear weapons race.

Remember the whole ABM thing, that stands for ANTI BALLISTIC MISSILE, and dates back to the 20th century (the 1980’s). This is nothing new.

Quite often a nation has no choice about it you are going to war or not.

Look at WWII, Japan made that decision for us.

We should always maintain MILITARY DETERRENCE.

[I think MAD is the reason the “big” countries fight their wars in backwater third world countries now. If nukes are “effectively” taken off the table, strength comes from other areas, like the number of troops you can effectively deploy, stuff like that.]

IMHO, that’s untrue. MAD is the reason nuclear-armed countries with retaliatory nuclear capability (e.g. one side doesn’t have the ability to completely wipe out the other side’s nukes in one blow) don’t use nukes against each other.

The reason democracies don’t invade other countries? Vox populi. Nobody wants to die in battle to make their elected leaders famous for posterity.

Why don’t dictators invade other countries? Uncle Sam stands ready to put his finger on the scale. No one wants to have to deal with the US getting in the middle. Saddam Hussein was an abject lesson.

If the US stops getting involved, dictators will march (or at least their armies will). Because Europe certainly can’t, thanks to their puny military budgets.

Just look at Libya and Syria, which affects them directly through refugee and illegal immigrant flows. The big players in those countries are Iran, Russia and Turkey. The Arab countries and Israel play a secondary role in Syria. The Arab countries play a secondary role in Libya. Europe is basically a spectator, a EUnuch, which would have been unthinkable a century ago.

That’s why the rest of the world is so anxious for Biden to be inaugurated. So the US resumes its role of globocop. They need us fighting the minor wars they ought to be fighting. Meanwhile, China grows stronger, while we fritter away resources in remote areas that should be pacified by regional powers.

“US Missile Intercept Ends Era of Nuclear Stability”

What is it with this Yahoo News crap? I guess the Russians and the Chinese didn’t destabilize this “Era of Nuclear Stability” After they went out and developed anti Ballistic missile systems to shoot out ICBM’s down.

The instability only occurred after the U.S. developed the technology to return the favor.

Yahoo News. Just Hypocrites.

Ok. Would never consider nukes in space, unless of course EMP can render selected satellites inert. But that has its own issues. I am not convinced the EMP will be as significant as some think when the detonation is 50 miles or more above a terrestrial point (areal or point) and in “space”. This has never been tested, obviously, but extrapolated from other atomic/nuclear test data. Plus, that data is old, and now computer generated.

Hijackers were able to bring down (2) 100-story buildings killing thousands by using airplanes broadcast on live television.....and all the technology in the world couldn’t stop it....

I would need to study this more, but I cannot believe a missile exists that would simply need to “fly into the other missile” to kill it, rather then explode within a predetermined proximity and disseminate metal of some sort to impact the other missile. That would be an incredibly stupid and risky engineering design to miss the shot when you were so close, and when such failure is not an option.

The fleshettes in tank rounds (AP) worked very well on earth! That concept can be even more useful in space for hi-speed targets. Your rods are perhaps more like sabot rods using in armor rounds. But why use rods when balls would work better (a “space shotgun blast”).

That and then there is the matter of decoys. Chaff, balloons with corner reflectors, etc. Looks just like incomings until they hit a significant amount of air resistance. Example would be an SS-18 with 10 warheads and 50 decoys.

This defense strategy is meant to frighten countries like North Korea and Iran into not launching a ballistic missile outside of their airspace. We won’t know if it is a nuke or not so this preventative measure will be used as a reminder. As for Russia and China, they aren’t launching anything because they know it is armageddon. Doesn’t matter who they are attacking. The minute we get the warning of a launch, we will ready our nuclear forces.

It comes down to, you launch and we intercept, we get a free shot.

The power players on the world stage (China, Russia, and the US) have long anticipated this development and have responded by developing the hypersonic glide vehicle. When fired in large enough numbers, they will get overwhelm current missile shields currently in place.

It’s still an interesting story though. We don’t have to agree with the Author’s spin on what it means. But the fact that this happened successfully is pretty cool.

Are they actually hitting the missile dead on or are they exploding close enough to concussively destroy an incoming missile?
