"Musk himself recently stated this:

Our power grid and power plants do not have the capacity for an EV world, and (most say) when we get to 5% of all vehicles being EV’s, it will begin to collapse. Rolling blackouts will likely be the only solution for more EV’s."

Musk's "real" long-term goal for SpaceX is construction of solar power satellites, not just internet satellites.

"I mean the posted article is enough to launch your research. I put training wheels on it for you with my link. God forbid you need to do some real research."

LOL. I know more about the subject than you have probably ever read. Compare the level of technology exposition in my link to yours to understand where I am coming from.

I can get about 85% of the chemical energy from gasoline to run my car. If I take that gas (or a similar fossil fuel) to boil water to make steam to turn turbines to make electricity, I get about 40% of the chemical energy. If I take that electricity and store it in a battery, I lose half of the energy. If I take that electricity out of the battery to run an electric motor to drive my car, I lose half the energy again. Someone please explain to me how electric cars are more efficient.

They are not efficient.

But if you use the nearly unlimited amounts of coal to make the juice (like China is doing building hundreds of coal fired power plants) you can substitute coal for oil.

Substituting coal for oil makes them less dependent on others for energy.

So why not produce your own power and sell the excess back to the power company.

If you sell back to the power company, you are no longer "off the grid"

Did not see your link. Was commenting on your carping about the posted article not being tech heavy enough. We are dealing with “journalists” after all. Expecting anything above a chilly room temp IQ is unreasonable and wishful thinking. Do’ers do, those who can’t, teach, and those who can’t hack either path become bitter “journalists.”

That’s true, but in Florida where I live, if you build a home you are required to be on the electric grid, which if I’m forced to do it, I want to take advantage of giving it back to the electric by selling it to them...

A number of years ago in Florida a Constitutional Amendment passed that I didn’t really understand but now I do, it required the power companies to purchase excess electricity from the consumer at the same price per kilowatt hour as they charge the public....

If money were no object, I would like to have a multilayered power system...

Solar with Battery Bank as the primary source, standby propane generator as the backup power source and if all else fails the power grid......

Where I would like to build has consistent wind because it’s on the water, so I would also look into a small consumer grad wind turbine.....

I could care less that it’s a “Green” energy solution, I’m trying to prepare myself of hurricanes, forest fires, etc.. .and the desire to produce it all myself...

But I think you are missing that Tesla is out putting up solar arrays on every house that it can, for as cheap as it can, and power is now generated at the point of demand, so the power grid and generation issues you are worried about may be moot, or at least, significantly alleviated.

Its a game changer. 500 km range with a 10 minute recharge time, puts it into drect cmpetition with gas powered vehicles.

I do not think I'd want to stand next to an electrical cable transmitting that much electricity into one of these cells.

I don't think you could manage it even at 440v. Perhaps we have an EE here that can do the math of the actual energy requirements this would represent.

Hence my "carping". I wish FR had a "Science and Technology" subforum.

The forever battery, rumored since at least the 70s (it’s mentioned in an episode of Barney Miller), but it’s never gonna happen for oh so many reasons.

Why can’t they produce an electric vehicle that has a belt driven generator that keeps the batteries charged all the time.

I have always wondered why these 'hybrid' cars didn't just have a diesel generator charging the battery. Use a diesel engine set to run at optimum RPMs to charge the battery. The battery itself handles peak loads, such as getting up to speed and the excess discharge of the battery is backfilled by the diesel generator once the vehicle is cruising.

The problem of course, is that the leftards hate diesel with a passion. Can't have something efficient, safe, and fully proven, because it would harm their actual objectives which is government control. They don't want to you to have the freedom to travel at will.

Sorry, not correct. Solar gains won’t come close to meeting increased demand - probably cannot ever meet current demand.

Plus solar cannot be stored except by exceptional expense like hydro-storage - pumping water up into lakes when solar is generating, then using turbines to generate via water flow when solar is not generating. These methods are so expensive no utilities are building them any more.

Nice thought - but the math just doesn’t add up. Sorry.

I guess that’s why they are also putting in Powerwalls. Especially in places that have TOU rules. Have you checked them out?
