Powerwalls are a new application of an old concept: have a large battery supply you charge with solar.
Great idea in limited applications. We have 15 acres of heavy forest and not enough sun and I’m not going to cut down beautiful large oaks to get more sunlight. At most with solar we can get half the power our place needs from solar.
I’d guess (wild) only 10% of all sites/locations will be good for Powerwalls.
So basically your viewpoint is that if it doesn’t work for you, it can’t possibly work for someone in a different locale with completely different circumstances. Powerwalls are small form factors. They hang on the wall. Any place that produces an excess of energy and has TOU rules, can implement the time shifting ability of a powerwall. Are they dirt cheap? Not yet. But it is not Star Trek technology either. LED tv’s weren’t cheap when they first came out either.
Wow. No idea how you conclude your first sentence from what I wrote. I am an electrical engineer with a lot of experience with battery backup systems, generators, large UPS systems.
My statement was “limited applications” and had nothing to do with my situation at all.
The costs are prohibitive for all but the most wealthy and the payback is......uh.......non-existent. So it’s not an investment like some solar systems.
