We could talk about this ad nauseam but the decision really rests with Donald Trump. If he chooses to fight within the framework of the GOP then there’s no third party, if he chooses to take the gamble and start the third party with the aim of finishing off the GOP within one or two electoral cycles, then that’s how it will go.

I wrote about this here a month ago. My opinion is that if you get to a critical mass above 75% of the support then the third party replaces the former party and it withers away. If you stay between 50 and 75 per cent, the two have a vote splitting potential to remain viable. If you don’t get to fifty per cent then the new party is the one that dies.

Some will naturally hold out in the old party until they realize that it has died a natural death. At some point it can be reduced to an empty shell of a few determined supporters with 1-2 per cent backing. This happened in Canadian politics to a formerly dominant conservative party known as Social Credit which formed governments in B.C. and Alberta. When it began to lose support to centrist conservative parties, it only took about five years to die off completely, to the point where they couldn’t even make the 1% mark in the popular vote.

The split of the Canadian conservative federal party after about 1993 took ten years to resolve and the final act of that was for the reformers to “win” a paper victory that ended up being a subterfuge move by the defeated party to regain control under a different name. The rank and file were duped by false promises about the direction of the merged party.

This is the whole problem faced at this point in America too, you can get something to happen, but killing off the swamp mentality is a different thing, it infects one person after another and seems almost impossible to eradicate. Trump probably has a maximum of five years left to influence American politics. Who will be the promise keeper(s) after his influence comes and goes, even if he succeeds in reforming the GOP into a populist anti-globalist party?

The Mitt Romneys of this world know when it’s time to slink out of sight and wait things out. Their day can always come again. This is why reform has to be very substantial and backed up by party structure reform that ensures no swamp creature control can return when danger passes.
