1889 - Nominally it killed just under 13,000. If you adjust for population differences (63 million in 1890 census vs 330 million today), that would be 68,095 today.

1918 - Killed 675,000 in the US. Adjusted for population (106 million in 1920), that would be 2.1 million deaths.

1957 - Killed 116,000. Adjusted for population (179 million in 1960), that would be 213,855 deaths.

1968 - Killed 100,000 in the US. Adjusted for population (203 million in 1970), that would be 162,562.

As for 1977, do you even have a link? The 1976-1977 and 1977-1978 flu seasons appear to have been normal flu seasons in the US.

Because that isn't the point. The point is what's costing lives. Seasonal flu costing 36,000 lives per year in the US (again, I don't care about Bahrain). The flu comparison is silly. Only one flu in history has cost more American lives and that was 1918. That's basic factual information.

From a policy standpoint, this doesn't justify the horrendous response from state and local governments - including forcing nursing homes to accept known-infected COVID-19 patients. If anything, it underscores just how important it was for state and local governments to provide a useful response and to ask for President Trump's help in doing useful things early on. The only reason this mess is ending as soon as it is is thanks to President Trump's efforts in Operation Warp Speed. Without that, we'd be in this for another year or more. But the states screwed up and Americans died as a result.

That’s a responsible approach if you’re seeing a higher than expected risk.
