Air fresheners and other objects dangling from rear view mirrors are not illegal. Do not give credibility to BS.

Depends on the state laws.

I’m pretty sure it’s been reported they were made aware of the warrant subsequent to the initial traffic stop. In fact, on the audio subsequent to the stop, you can hear someone announce, “He’s got warrants” just before the suspect jumps into the driver’s seat.

Uh, No.

See post #16. Exactly the opposite.

What police say happened

Brooklyn Center police officers initiated the traffic stop for a “traffic violation” and then determined the driver had an “outstanding warrant,” a news release on Sunday said.

On Monday, Chief Gannon said he was pulled over for expired tabs and then an officer saw something hanging from his rearview mirror. Then, the officer ran his name through the system and found he had a warrant.

Wright was pulled over by members of the Brooklyn Center Police Department near Minneapolis, Minnesota, on April 11 for having expired license plate tags. The police officers learned of Wright’s outstanding arrest warrant while verifying his personal information during the traffic stop and tried to arrest him. Wright resisted the arrest and got back into his car as officers attempted to handcuff him. An officer named Kimberly Potter accidentally shot Wright with a gun during the altercation

The officers did not know Wright had an outstanding warrant when they pulled him over in April, 2021. During a press conference on April 12, 2021, Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon said:

From what I’ve understood from the public safety briefing, there was an expired registration on the vehicle. That means the tags were expired. Upon arrival, when the officer made contact, I think at that time when he walked up to the car, he discovered that there was a hanging item from the rear-view mirror. So there was a contact that the officer went up there initially for, attained his ID or his drivers name, and he walked back to his car and at that time he ran his name and he found out that he had a warrant. That’s why they removed him from the car and they were making a custodial arrest.

What's up with the mirror fetish?

Seriously? Sunglasses laid overtop the mirror for easy access, while out of sight lines?

Fetish?

Repressed much?

Funny thing, I grew older, and without changing a SINGLE habit, the "friendly professional law enforcement folks" stopped pulling me over for utter bullshit reasons like having something on the mirror.

One Saturday morning when I was considerably younger, while en route to work, NOT speeding, NOT drunk, NOT breaking any traffic law, regulation or common practice, I personally was stopped and held by an "officer friendly" for over TWO HOURS. ONLY because I was a young man on *HIS* road. He cost me my job! Yes, that level of harassment happens to WHITE boys, too.

Yeah, "most" cops are fine, decent folk. However, until they get rid of their problem members, they are ALL culpable for the misbehavior of the bad ones.

QUIT COVERING UP THE BAD ONES ALREADY!

Air fresheners and other objects dangling from rear view mirrors are not illegal.

That depends entirely on where. It is most certainly illegal in some states, as they are considered vision obstructions, and the laws in those states define them as such.

‘Should they be’ is another issue, but in those states they are definitely illegal.

Maybe maybe not not all warrants are linked to vehicle registrations.

He was stopped because his plates had expired. The warrant was for armed robbery, not for a ‘misdemeanor’ as some reports have said. The cops that went to his car knew all of this.

Don’t police cruisers have computers to run info on plates, so they know what they’re dealing with before they get out of their veh?

I always assume my plate will be run even though I’m a Senior, and the CCW will show up. So the officer gets hands on steering wheel, polite, follow orders uneventful stop. Only been pulled over twice since I got my permit in 1999. 1 driving in left lane to long, other I don’t remember. No tickets. Car has hubby’s Ret USN stickers on it.

Yes they do, however it takes time, there might be others in the que waiting for their information. Cops ALWAYS call in the plate number, and often will pull over a vehicle prior to dispatch getting back to them with info.

Ever seen the cops walk back to their vehicles AFTER the initial traffic stop? This happens all the time, and the cops after getting ID from the driver, whoever that may be, go back to their MDT in their vehicle are run the ID for wants and warrants.

Cops often don't know who's driving he vehicle. Is the driver the registered owner or RO? Who knows. Most the time the cops have no idea who the actual driver might be and the reason why they often run their ID's AFTER the initial stop.
